Job Description Job SummaryThe Public Works Department is seeking a Vehicle Technician II to support Fleet Maintenance operations. This role is responsible for performing skilled journey-level maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on a wide range of vehicles, motorcycles, and heavy equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and diagnostic expertise, experience working with fleet systems, and the ability to support daily maintenance operations in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities • Perform lubrication services and oil changes on light-duty vehicles, heavy-duty vehicles, and construction equipment., • Mount, balance, repair, and replace tires and wheels., • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions using diagnostic equipment and tools., • Diagnose and repair emissions control systems and related components., • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance services including inspection and replacement of filters and other service components., • Conduct vehicle and equipment safety inspections, including applicable regulatory inspections., • Inspect, maintain, and repair hydraulic and air brake systems, ABS systems, and conventional braking systems., • Diagnose and repair fuel systems, cooling and heating systems, electrical systems, engines, transmissions, clutches, drivetrains, and differentials., • Maintain and repair vehicle HVAC systems, including leak diagnostics and air conditioning recharge procedures., • Remove, install, maintain, and repair emergency equipment and add-on vehicle accessories as assigned., • Test drive vehicles and equipment to verify repairs and ensure operational safety., • Requisition parts and supplies required for repairs and maintenance activities., • Record maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and labor hours within computerized fleet management systems., • Use computers and handheld devices for workflow management, communication, and parts tracking., • Maintain shop equipment, ensure work areas remain clean, and properly dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with policies and regulations., • Perform emergency roadside repairs and respond to after-hours service calls as required., • Provide guidance and mentorship to entry-level technicians as assigned., • Perform additional related duties as needed. Required Qualifications • Minimum of three (3) years of experience diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and maintaining vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment., • Strong knowledge of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel powered engines., • Understanding of automotive electrical systems, powertrain systems, emissions systems, braking systems, suspension systems, and HVAC systems., • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues in vehicles and equipment., • Proficiency using mechanic hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and computerized fleet systems., • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair documentation., • Strong verbal and written communication skills., • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships., • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities may be considered. Preferred Qualifications • Experience working with emergency response vehicles, motorcycles, or specialized fleet equipment., • ASE Master Certification in Automobile and/or Medium/Heavy Truck., • Valid Class “M1” driver’s license. Certifications • Valid Class “C” Driver’s License required., • Minimum of two (2) ASE certifications in Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck categories required within 12 months of employment., • ASE Master Certification in Automobile and/or Medium/Heavy Truck preferred.
