Job Description SUMMARY The Cost Analyst plays a critical part in enabling cost transparency, operational efficiency, and financial discipline to support BSM’s strategic growth in the Oat Milling Business Unit, with operations in Belgrade, Montana (U.S.) and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada). This role is integral in ensuring accurate costing, robust inventory controls, and actionable financial analysis in a commodity-driven manufacturing environment. The Cost Analyst will be responsible for item cost setup and maintenance, bills of material (BOMs), work order compliance, and accurate recording of inventory transactions. The position also provides insights into production performance, yields, and variances while partnering closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Quality Assurance, and Logistics. This is a highly collaborative, hands-on role requiring strong cost accounting skills, ERP proficiency (Microsoft Dynamics 365 preferred), and the ability to thrive in a matrix reporting environment. The role has direct impact on operational performance, decision-making, and financial accuracy. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Costing & Inventory Control • Maintain and monitor item cost setup, item master data, and bills of material (BOMs) within the ERP system., • Ensure compliance with inventory transaction processes, including receipts, transfers, consumption, and adjustments., • Support accurate work order creation, closure, and variance analysis., • Reconcile and validate inventory balances across locations, ensuring compliance with internal controls and audit requirements., • Track and analyze production results, yield performance, and cost variances., • Prepare timely and accurate cost, yield, and variance reports for plant leadership and Finance., • Assist in monthly close activities related to inventory and cost of goods sold, including journal entries and reconciliations., • Provide ad hoc financial and operational analysis in support of production efficiency, supply chain optimization, and commodity utilization., • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance data accuracy and operational efficiency., • Serve as a key user of ERP (Microsoft Dynamics 365), maintaining integrity of costing and inventory data., • Participate in ERP-related projects, process improvements, and system upgrades., • Collaborate with Operations, Supply Chain, Quality Assurance, and Logistics to ensure accurate and compliant cost and inventory practices., • Provide cost accounting support to broader Oat Milling Finance initiatives and corporate reporting requirements., • Communicate financial concepts effectively to non-financial colleagues to improve decision-making. EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required., • CPA/CMA designation or progress toward certification preferred., • 2–5 years of cost accounting or inventory accounting experience in a manufacturing or agricultural/commodity-based industry., • Experience with ERP systems required; Microsoft Dynamics 365 strongly preferred, Power BI a plus), • Strong Excel and data analysis skills required., • Manufacturing or multi-plant experience a plus., • Familiarity with cross-border inventory and costing practices, including currency considerations and regulatory compliance across jurisdictions is preferred. OTHER REQUIREMENTS • Solid understanding of standard costing, BOMs, work orders, and inventory accounting., • Knowledge of commodity-based businesses or agricultural processing (milling, grain, food ingredients) preferred., • Ability to work effectively in a matrix reporting environment, supporting multiple facilities., • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders., • Attention to detail, analytical mindset, and a commitment to data integrity., • Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver accurate results under tight deadlines., • Ability to translate complex cost and inventory data into clear visualizations and narratives for operational and executive audiences., • Comfort with ambiguity and change in a fast-evolving manufacturing environment; ability to support system transitions and continuous improvement initiatives.
