The Retention Coach will help build the retention program from the ground up-developing outreach strategies, coaching practices, tracking systems, and partnerships-while working directly with students to address academic, personal, and institutional barriers to success. This role is ideal for a student-centered professional who is energized by creating new systems, shaping practice, and directly impacting student success. As an inaugural member of the retention coaching team, the Retention Coach will play a critical role in establishing consistent, equitable, and proactive support structures for new, first-year, at-risk, adult, and returning students. Position Overview The Retention Coach provides proactive, first-year case-management-based coaching aligned to Guided Pathways and First-Year Experience frameworks, supporting students from entry through successful transition into their academic pathways. This position contributes directly to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of first-year retention strategies and new student orientation programming. The Retention Coach works collaboratively with advising, enrollment services, faculty, financial aid, tutoring, and student support programs to ensure a coordinated, student-centered experience that removes barriers and promotes early academic momentum. Key Responsibilities Program Development & Team-Based Support (All Coaches) • Serve as an inaugural contributor to the development and launch of the college's first-year success program and new student orientation model, retention coaching program, including shared goals, workflows, communication protocols, and success metrics., • Participate in building and refining case management, outreach, and documentation practices to ensure consistent, high-quality student support., • Collaborate as part of a coordinated coaching team to deliver proactive, equity-centered retention and completion support., • Use data, early alert systems, and faculty/staff referrals to identify students in need of intervention and coordinate timely support., • Track student engagement, progress, and outcomes to inform continuous improvement and program scaling., • Partner with faculty, advisors, tutoring, and student support services to provide integrated, wraparound support., • Identify and address academic, personal, financial, and basic-needs barriers through equity-minded, student-centered practices., • Support critical first-year milestones, including onboarding, course registration, early alerts, and re-enrollment., • Collaborate across academic and student affairs to ensure pathway-aligned, seamless support., • Utilize student success systems, early alert tools, and data to prioritize outreach and inform interventions., • Use disaggregated data to identify equity gaps in course success and persistence and adjust coaching strategies accordingly., • Participate in ongoing professional development related to coaching, equity-minded practices, and subject-specific pedagogy., • Contribute to assessment, reporting, and refinement of the retention coaching model as it scales., • Provide holistic, proactive coaching (including maintaining regular outreach and follow-up) to an assigned first-year student caseload, addressing study strategies, time management, motivation, and help-seeking behaviors to improve student persistence and completion., • Identify non-academic barriers (e.g., basic needs, technology access, work-life balance) and proactively connect students to appropriate resources to create solutions for at-risk students and those facing academic, personal and social difficulties and offer guidance and support in navigating dynamic, fast-paced learning environments., • Support students in navigating college processes, policies, and resources that impact persistence and completion., • Develop and implement effective personalized academic success plans tailored to student unique goals, strengths, and challenges., • Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with students, fostering a sense of belonging and accountability for their educational journey., • Implement and continually develop effective best practices and retention strategies to retain students, specifically first-year and other students., • Communicate regularly with students and conduct regular check-ins with at-risk or struggling students., • Conduct timely outreach to at-risk students and help them create action plans for improvement., • Communicate accurate and timely information and feedback to students., • Support, guide and empower students through their first year to build the formation for continued success and development of skills necessary to be advocates for themselves., • Embed learning opportunities to develop student self-advocacy skills and foster autonomy., • Contribute toward creating a positive and respectful workplace., • Support students and counsel them to better understand their MCC experience., • Provide targeted coaching and academic support focused on math persistence and course success, particularly in developmental, gateway, and high-enrollment math courses., • Collaborate with math faculty, tutoring centers, and learning labs to align coaching with course expectations and supports., • Partner with faculty across programs to reinforce effective strategies embedded in coursework., • Provide specialized coaching to support student success in English, writing, and composition courses., • Collaborate with English faculty, writing centers, and tutoring services to reinforce aligned strategies and expectations., • Help define and establish the college's first-year retention and orientation practices, • Directly influence student persistence, engagement, and success via proactive, case-management-based support to first-year, at-risk, adult, or returning students, • Contribute to institutional effectiveness and accreditation expectations related to student support, equity, and continuous improvement, • Be part of a growing, mission-driven team focused on transforming the student experience Join Us Mesa Community College is committed to creating inclusive, equitable learning environments where all students can succeed. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of student services or college teaching experience, or experience coordinating, administering, planning, or evaluating programs. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Desired Qualifications A Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, student personnel, or college student affairs leadership or related field from a regionally accredited college or university. B One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years. C Direct experience working within a First-Year Experience (FYE) model, including orientation, first-year seminars, success courses, learning communities, or cohort-based programming. D Demonstrated experience delivering and implementing proactive, case-management, success coaching, or intrusive advising for first-year, exploratory, at-risk, adult, or returning students, with a focus on persistence, academic momentum, and completion within a Guided Pathways or structured onboarding framework. E Subject-Specialized Roles: Experience supporting students in mathematics success initiatives, including placement/placement alternatives, corequisite or accelerated pathways, quantitative reasoning, and gateway math completion. OR Experience supporting students in English, reading, or writing success initiatives, including placement/placement alternatives, corequisite models, first-year composition, and academic literacy development. F Experience utilizing early alert systems, CRM platforms, SIS, degree audit tools, student success technologies, MS Office Suite, Google Applications, Zoom, etc. G Experience translating and using quantitative and qualitative information, data dashboards, KPIs, and student success metrics to guide strategy and operational decisions. H Proven ability to collaborate with academic affairs, faculty leadership, enrollment services, institutional research, IT, and student affairs units related to retention, enrollment, completion, or strategic planning.
