Job Description Sailing Instructor Department: Sailing Reports to: Waterfront Amenities & Sailing Director Employment Type: Seasonal Statement of Purpose: Responsible for assisting with the day-to-day tasks of the summer sailing program. Skillfully apply the Club Rules and ensure safety for all sailors. Works collaboratively with the Sailing Director and coaching staff for daytime sailing instruction for campers. The Sailing Instructor will assist the Sailing Director in providing great leadership and excellent services to Members of the Key Biscayne Yacht Club. Primary Duties: • Diligent with daily planning to ensure the safety and engagement of all sailors in their assigned groups., • Assists with daily lesson plans and activities for campers based on abilities and ages and coordinates with the participants and parents., • Follows program lesson plans and implementation plans in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of all campers., • Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development approaches., • Communicates appropriately with parents and attends designated parent/family events. Maintains close communication with Marina & Facilities Director to ensure smooth program operations., • Assists with daily check-in/out of youth program sailors., • Take an active role in the water sports program including the rental of club owned equipment., • Ensures that all boats are returned to their moorings in proper condition at the end of each day; and ensure any extraneous equipment or materials (including trash) has been removed and disposed of properly., • Ensures that all equipment (sails, blades etc.) is returned to the KBYC facility in proper condition at the end of each day. Service Focused • Friendly and service-oriented personality with good interpersonal skills., • High school graduate, and/or appropriate combination of training and experience, • Must be at least 16 years of age, • Attendance of at least 4 years in a formal sailing program, • Minimum US Sailing Level 1 Certification (training weekend prior to camp will be offered at applicants’ expense), • First Aid and CPR certified by either an AHA or Red Cross approved organization required, • A minimum of 1 year of experience working as a Sailing Instructor in a private club environment preferred or attendance of at least 4 years in a formal sailing program Operational Skills • Ability to understand Members’ needs and to deliver superior customer service., • Ability to work long hours with a strong focus on operational excellence., • Basic knowledge of use and care of dinghy tools and machinery., • Knowledge of boats and line handling., • Ability to effectively communicate with students., • Very good verbal and written communication skills in English., • Ability to work in an outdoor environment in a hot climate., • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects up to 30 lbs or more frequently., • Requires writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability, and visual acuity., • Ability to stand and/or walk long distances for an extended period, or an entire work shift., • Ability to perform mainly physical functions.
