Job Title\n\nContracts Manager\n\nReporting To:\n\nContracts Director\n\nDirect Reports:\n\nAll staff working on projects assigned by the Contracts Director.\n\nThe Client\n\nA leading multi-disciplined construction and civil engineering company delivering demolition, enabling works, remediation, earthworks, infrastructure, and sustainable solutions across the UK. The business is recognised for its commitment to safety, innovation, sustainability, operational excellence, and collaborative client relationships.\n\nThe Contracts Manager will play a key leadership role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, profitably, and in line with my clients values and standards.\n\nRole\n\nThe Contracts Manager is responsible for the operational, commercial, safety, environmental, and programme performance of multiple projects under their control. The role ensures projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the high-quality standards expected by my client and their clients.\n\nThe role also supports business growth by maintaining strong client relationships, identifying opportunities, and contributing to tendering and business development activities.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nHealth, Safety, Environmental & Quality (SHEQ)\n\nPromote and uphold strong safety-first culture across all projects.\n\nEnsure all projects comply with company Safety, Environmental, and Quality Management Systems.\n\nEnsure health, safety, and welfare standards are maintained for employees, subcontractors, visitors, and the public.\n\nEnsure project-specific SHEQ plans are developed, implemented, and approved.\n\nInvestigate incidents and accidents thoroughly and report findings to Directors.\n\nEnsure SHEQ audits are completed and corrective actions implemented.\n\nWork closely with the SHEQ team to ensure continuous compliance and improvement.\n\nOperational Management\n\nManage multiple projects to achieve programme, operational, and financial objectives.\n\nEnsure works are delivered in accordance with specifications, drawings, client expectations, and contractual obligations.\n\nMaintain strong client communication and protect the company’s commercial interests.\n\nOversee procurement of subcontractors, plant, and materials to achieve best value and programme delivery.\n\nEnsure all procurement activities align with company procedures and tender allowances.\n\nDevelop, monitor, and manage project programmes and key milestones.\n\nEnsure delays, variations, and changes are effectively managed and communicated.\n\nLead regular project and progress meetings with internal teams and stakeholders.\n\nCommercial Management\n\nMaximise profitability and contribute positively to company cashflow and commercial performance.\n\nMonitor budgets, forecasts, cost control, and value recovery across all projects.\n\nAttend monthly commercial and contract review meetings.\n\nSupport the Commercial Team in managing risks, opportunities, valuations, and final accounts.\n\nLeadership & Communication\n\nLead project teams through positive leadership, collaboration, and accountability.\n\nPromote company values, standards, and professional reputation.\n\nCommunicate effectively with Directors, Managers, clients, subcontractors, and stakeholders.\n\nEscalate risks or issues affecting delivery, safety, programme, or commercial performance promptly.\n\nPersonnel Management\n\nSupport the development, supervision, and performance management of site teams.\n\nDefine clear roles and responsibilities across projects.\n\nIdentify training and development needs within teams.\n\nSupport recruitment, succession planning, and employee progression.\n\nEncourage continuous professional development and high-performance culture.\n\nBusiness Development & Client Relationships\n\nBuild and maintain strong working relationships with existing and prospective clients.\n\nSupport estimating and tendering teams during bid submissions and project planning.\n\nIdentify opportunities for repeat business and new market sectors.\n\nRepresent the company professionally at meetings, networking events, and industry functions.\n\nPromote the company’s reputation for quality, safety, and delivery excellence.\n\nPerson Specification\n\nEssential Experience\n\nProven experience as a Contracts Manager within construction, demolition, civil engineering, remediation, or enabling works.\n\nStrong experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.\n\nDemonstrable operational and commercial management capability.\n\nExperience managing subcontractors, procurement, project programmes, and client relationships.\n\nStrong understanding of construction contracts and project delivery processes.\n\nEssential Skills & Competencies\n\nStrong leadership and people management skills.\n\nExcellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.\n\nCommercial awareness and financial management capability.\n\nStrong planning, organisational, and problem-solving skills.\n\nAbility to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.\n\nStrong knowledge of health & safety legislation and industry best practice.\n\nQualifications\n\nRelevant construction-related qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent).\n\nSMSTS certification.\n\nAppropriate CSCS Card.\n\nFull UK Driving Licence.\n\nDesirable\n\nMembership of CIOB, RICS, ICE, or equivalent professional body.\n\nNEBOSH or IOSH qualification.\n\nExperience within demolition, enabling works, remediation, earthworks, or infrastructure sectors.\n\nKnowledge of NEC and JCT forms of contract.\n\nKey Performance Indicators (KPIs)\n\nHealth & safety performance.\n\nProject delivery against programme.\n\nCommercial
