Job Description This job will require relocation to Catalina Island, CA. This position is based in the interior of Catalina Island in our Middle Ranch auto shop. Key Responsibilities, What You'll Do: As our Journeyman Mechanic, you'll be essential in keeping our operations running smoothly. Your responsibilities include: • Vehicle Diagnostics & Repair: Perform advanced diagnostics and comprehensive repairs on diverse Conservancy vehicles and equipment, ensuring optimal performance and safety. This includes troubleshooting and resolving mechanical, electrical, and electronic system malfunctions., • Engine Expertise: Apply in-depth knowledge of gas and diesel engines, including complex repairs and rebuilds., • Preventive Maintenance: Conduct inspections, testing, and routine maintenance (tune-ups, oil changes, tire services, brake repairs, etc.) to ensure equipment availability., • Record Keeping & Shop Maintenance: Maintain detailed vehicle maintenance records and ensure shop equipment remains operational., • Professional Development: Stay current with industry advancements through ongoing education., • Operational Support: Provide crucial support to Conservancy operations as needed, including tasks like shop cleaning, assisting with bison herding, road maintenance, and fire prevention. Education & Experience • High School Diploma or GED is required., • ASE Certification is required., • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in an accredited automotive shop., • Expert Diagnostic Skills: Strong understanding of modern vehicle systems, including cooling, brakes, steering, and engine management. This includes advanced competency in using scanners to read codes and analyze PID data for diagnosing issues across transmission, emissions, ABS, and Vehicle Stability Control Systems., • Engine Rebuilding Proficiency: Comprehensive knowledge of both gas and diesel engines, with significant experience in mechanics and rebuilding processes., • Tool Proficiency: Familiarity with power and pneumatic tools, as well as an understanding of tire machines, including their mechanical and safety features., • Broad Repair Capability: Ability to perform a wide range of repairs and maintenance on a diverse fleet of vehicles., • Advanced Troubleshooting: Expertise in automotive troubleshooting and repair techniques, with the ability to quickly identify issues, gather relevant data, and efficiently analyze solutions., • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Ability to maintain confidentiality, embrace new ideas, and welcome innovation., • Effective Communication: Excellent communication skills to clearly and persuasively convey technical information in various situations., • Electronic & Computerized Systems: Proficiency in electronic systems, diagnostics, and computerized automotive technologies. This role involves significant physical activity. You must be able to: • Regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds., • Hike over steep, rugged terrain and unstable rocky surfaces., • Perform extensive manual labor and use equipment and tools for up to 8 hours daily., • Frequently perform overhead work involving pushing, pulling, and twisting while arms are fully extended (e.g., removing or installing filters, nuts, bolts).
