Together, we keep getting better - advancing our mission to transform healthcare and serve as a leader of positive change.\n \n \nA sleep technologist works under the general supervision of the medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. A sleep technologist is credentialed in sleep technology and is able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff. Technicians and trainees work under the direct supervision of the credentialed sleep technologist or the medical director.\n \n Responsibilities\n \n \nA day in the life of a Polysomnographic Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:\n \n\n • Sleep Study Preparation and Set-up \n \n • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).\n, • Determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.\n, • Review the patient`s history and verify the medical order.\n, • Follow sleep center protocols related to the sleep study.\n, • When a patient arrives, verify identification, collect documents and obtain consent for the study.\n, • Explain the procedure and orient the patient for either in center or home sleep apnea testing.\n, • Provide age appropriate patient education.\n, • Select appropriate equipment and calibrate for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.\n, • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.\n, • Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization Sleep Study Procedures\n, • Follow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.\n, • Perform appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments.\n, • Follow `lights out` procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.).\n, • Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free.\n, • Identify, correct and document artifacts.\n, • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.\n, • Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).\n, • Follow `lights on` procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeat the physiological and instrument calibrations and instruct the patient on completing questionnaires, checking for completeness, etc.).\n, • Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.\n, • Score clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards.\n, • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.\n, • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.\n, • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.\n, • Perform patient education and instruction appropriate for home sleep apnea testing.\n, • Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures.\n, • Monitor patient safety and adhere to patient safety protocols.\n, • Demonstrate adherence to AASM scoring parameters; identify artifact, inadequate signals and equipment failures and generate an accurate report.\n \n, • Service Management and Essential Skills \n \n • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.\n, • Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.\n, • Maintain current CPR or BLS certification.\n, • Demonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position.\n, • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.\n, • Demonstrate appropriate social skills.\n, • Demonstrate customer service skills.\n, • Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision to analyze complex situations and apply policy.\n, • Demonstrate teamwork skills.\n, • Follow HIPAA and privacy policies.\n, • Demonstrate ability to follow directions.\n, • Respond to sleep patients` procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate education utilizing sleep center specific protocols.\n, • Adhere to sleep center policies and procedures.\n, • Participate in the quality assurance program.\n, • Inspect and maintain sleep study related equipment and inventory\n, • Review and evaluate sleep studies and provide appropriate feedback to staff.\n, • Comply with professional standards of conduct.\n, • Assist the medical director, clinical director and/or manager in all aspects of sleep center operations\n, • Assists in the maintenance of inventory and supply requirements.\n, • Participates in community education requirements, as requested.\n, • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.\n, • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.\n \n\n \n Qualifications\n \n \nEducation, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:\n \n\n • Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology OR successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technician.\n, • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.\n, • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.\n\n \nEducation, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:\n \n\n • Related prior experience\n\n \nLicenses and Certifications Required:\n \n\n • Polysomnography Technologist License or Registered Sleep Technologist or Registered Respiratory Therapist Sleep Disorders Specialty.\n\n \nWorking Conditions:\n \n\n • Extensive employee and outside contacts.\n, • High Stress\n, • Works indoors in a well lighted and ventilated area.\n, • Possibility of cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment\n, • Some direct exposure to contagion, but risk is minimal when proper safety precautions are observed.\n, • Possibility of strains due to moving patients (or objects).\n, • Requires substantial standing, walking, stooping, and lifting.\n, • Willingness to work with the realization that errors and incompetency may have serious consequences to patients.\n\n \nPhysical Demands:\n \n\n • Requires constant verbal communication in person or using the phone.\n, • Requires frequent reading of correspondence, reports, material, etc.\n, • Frequently lifts objects from 10 - 150 lbs.\n, • Frequently lifts with assistance objects greater than 150 lbs.\n\n \nMental Demands:\n \n\n • Requires ability to read and concentrate frequently to check accuracy of reports, correspondence, computer records, etc.\n, • Requires ability to read, understand, analyze and interpret policies and procedures.\n, • Requires ability to deal with stress of dealing with public, frequent interruptions, and working on more than one task concurrently.\n, • Requires flexibility in order to respond to changes in priorities, special project assignments, and emergency situations.\n, • Apply principals of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in order to provide effective patient care.\n\n \nIf you feel the above description speaks directly to your strengths and capabilities, then please apply today!\n \n Compensation\n \nMinimum rate of $32.17 Hourly\n \n \nHMH is committed to pay equity and transparency for our team members.
