Job Description JOB TITLE: Lifeguard & Swim Instructor/ Direct Support Professional FSLA STATUS: Non-exempt/Full Time Hours: Monday through Friday, Hours vary from 7:30 am to 6 pm, Occasional Saturday, hours vary. Hours not to exceed 40 hours a week. Salary range: $21.00 – $25.00/hour based on job duties and experience. APPOINTED BY: Chief Executive Officer, Program Director & Aquatics Manager RESPONSIBLE TO: Aquatics Manager/ Program Manager BASIC FUNCTIONS: Perform duties under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager & Head Lifeguard. Works directly & supervises adults with mild to profound developmental disabilities. This position exists to protect life, to prevent0 accidents and perform required pool and facility maintenance. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Teach and guard adaptive swim and exercise classes., • Assist Aquatics Manager and Head Lifeguard with performing pool facility maintenance., • Assist Head Swim Coach with adaptive swim team practices and swim meets., • Lifeguard and assist at scheduled aquatic events., • Perform lifesaving techniques and administer first aid, rescue breathing, and CPR., • Ability to exhibit professionalism, courtesy, and flexibility when working with students and families on all assigned duties., • Instruct and lifeguard all SMSC aquatics program/public participants., • Teach public swim lessons and other aquatics classes., • Assist in program departments during off season., • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills., • Must demonstrate ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively., • Understand the strengths, weaknesses, and needs of members of persons served., • Monitor and report any concerns related to health and safety to the Program Manager or designee. This includes any documented or suspected unlawful discrimination, adult abuse, or harassment., • Be able to establish appropriate communication levels with both workers and fellow peers., • Attend all meetings assigned including ISP meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings as required based on job duties., • Must have a working knowledge of all SMSC policies and procedures on confidentiality., • Follow all applicable laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the Lanterman Act Title 17 and Title 22 of the State of California., • Expected to provide transportation for program participants to a variety of activities in the community using Organization vehicles., • Responsible for all other duties as assigned by the program manager to ensure the safe and efficient daily operation of the program., • Expected to provide appropriate personal care to program participants based on individual needs. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of water hazards: pool safety; principles of supervision and training, lifesaving and first aid; appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Ability to: perform proper rescue techniques; administer CPR and First Aid; react quickly, calmly and exercise good judgment in emergency situations; work cooperatively with others. Aquatics instructor skills: Understand the fundamentals of teaching a learn to swim class, teach competitive swim strokes, and water fitness exercises, adapt teaching skills to meet the needs of a disabled student. Computer skills: General computer and Microsoft office skills. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS: Productivity: Must perform work in an efficient, effective, and timely manner without constant supervision and must react to change productively. Expected to be in attendance and prepared to perform the duties of the position. Heavy Work: Position in this class performs work, which may involve lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects, which may weigh 50 lbs. or more. Mobility: Position will require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach, pull, push, bend, lift and carry. Must be able to swim and perform all lifesaving skills and participate in regular in-service training. Vision: Must have vision to distinguish objects at a distance of no less than 75 yards. Hearing: Must be able to hear conversations and calls from no less than 75 yards. Verbal: Must be able to communicate in a clear and concise manner face to face, over the phone with members of the public and co-workers. Other Conditions: Required to work with hazardous chemicals and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. • Must be 18 years of age., • Minimum high school diploma or GED required., • At least one year experience teaching swim lessons., • Must possess the following American Red Cross certifications: lifeguard training, WSI, CPR PRO for lifeguards., • Preferred certifications as a Special Olympics aquatics coach, Arthritis Foundation aquatics/land instructor., • Preferred six months of direct care or direct training of people with intellectual, developmental, learning, or physical disabilities or equivalent experience in social services., • Must be able to conform to applicable laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to Title 17 and Title 22 of the State of California., • Must be able to read, write, and understand English., • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol tests., • Must complete a pre-employment health screening/TB test., • Must be able to obtain and maintain clearance for required criminal records., • Valid CA Drivers License, clean DMV Report, and 12 months of licensed driving experience., • Must have CPR and First Aid Training and update certification annually., • Must adhere to the *Mission Statement, Vision, and Values of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center *Mission of St. Madeleine Sophies Center is to educate and empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to realize their full potential.
