About the Position: The DCAT Safety Director provides enterprise-level leadership, technical expertise, and strategic oversight to advance the Company’s aspirational goal of zero incidents and injuries across all projects. This role is accountable for the development, execution, and continuous improvement of safety programs, systems, and practices that support high-risk, mission-critical construction operations. The Director serves as a strategic partner to Project Superintendents and Foremen, acting as the primary internal client interface, and ensures each project develops, implements, and sustains an effective Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP). The role maintains and evolves the Company’s Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) program, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and client expectations. This position establishes clear standards for safety information management, ensuring data, tools, and resources are well organized, accessible, and actionable for field and operations teams. The Director ensures all injuries, near-misses, and significant safety events are promptly and thoroughly investigated, with corrective actions implemented to prevent recurrence. The Director minimizes the impact of workplace injuries on employees and the Company by overseeing injury response and recovery strategies, including coordination of first response, partnerships with occupational medicine and triage providers, and the administration of light-duty and return-to-work programs. As the senior leader of the Safety Department, the Director is responsible for talent strategy and people leadership, including recruitment, development, performance management, compensation planning, succession planning, and staffing deployment. This role serves as a strong advocate for the safety organization and its integration with operations. The Director collaborates closely with Safety Leaders across other Lewis operating divisions to ensure consistency in safety culture, policies, standards, and processes across the enterprise. Additional Expectations-DCAT: The Safety Director provides strategic leadership, specialized technical oversight, and program governance for all safety operations within DCAT, including mission-critical data centers, semiconductor facilities, advanced manufacturing, and other high-hazard technology environments. This role ensures consistent implementation of the Company’s EH&S program while adapting to the unique operational, regulatory, and risk profiles of data center and advanced industrial construction. The Director drives safety performance through close partnership with DCAT operations leadership, policy development, data analytics, continuous improvement initiatives, and visible servant leadership, ensuring all projects meet or exceed Company standards and client and owner EHS expectations. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership & Safety CultureLead by example-modeling safety as the #1 core value.Create and publish an annual business plan for safety within the business unit, including measurable goals and performance indicators.Represent the Safety Department as needed for client facing presentations, executive meetings, and enterprise level safety initiatives.Build and sustain a high-performance safety culture tailored to the demands of mission critical and high hazard work environments.Continuously improve safety standards, tools and training to optimize project performance. EH&S Program OversightIn collaboration with other Operating Divisions, evaluate, align, and continuously improve EH&S programs, technical standards, and high-hazard procedures, including LOTO, energized work, confined space entry, commissioning, chemical handling, and tool installation.Ensure the consistent deployment and effective use of safety management systems, data platforms, audit tools, and leading-indicator frameworks tailored to high-risk construction environments.Regularly evaluate crane and hoisting programs to verify that each project is utilizing the appropriate standards, controls, and program tools. Safety Team Management and DevelopmentManage the division’s safety staffing strategy, including recruitment, intercompany transfers, workforce planning, and reductions as needed.Conduct, or delegate as appropriate, annual performance reviews for all members of the Safety Team.Lead the annual merit and bonus process by providing objective performance evaluations based on role expectations and core competencies, and by reviewing and endorsing recommended compensation adjustments; ensure performance discussions are delivered in a way that motivates, reinforces accountability, and supports development.In partnership with People Services, promptly address performance concerns and develop and oversee Personal Improvement Plans (PIPs) when appropriate.Identify high-performing team members and recommend promotions to the Director of Field Operations.Build the performance and leadership capacity of the Safety Team through formal and informal mentoring, targeted development opportunities, and active succession planning.Meet regularly with each direct report to review progress toward goals, remove obstacles, and provide coaching. Schedule and lead Safety Team meetings at least monthly to ensure alignment and communication. Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) GovernanceReview and approve project Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) to ensure compliance with Company standards, owner requirements, and applicable regulatory obligations.Ensure commissioning, startup, and MEP integration safety procedures are fully developed, documented, and implemented for each project.Support Safety Teams in the review of subcontractor SSSPs, ensuring alignment and coordination across multi-trade, high-hazard operations.Verify that SSSPs are updated in a timely manner as project conditions evolve, including phased turnover, energized systems, confined spaces, hot work schedules, and client-specific protocols.In collaboration with field leadership and safety staff, develop and maintain SSSPs for all projects within the business unit, incorporating industry-specific risks, redundancy requirements, and client expectations. Safety Audits & Field ObservationsMaintain a strong and visible presence in the field by conducting regular jobsite walks, audits, and inspections across all projects, with hands‑on engagement focused on high‑risk activities.Actively lead and participate in a structured, hazard‑focused audit cadence, working directly with field leadership and safety staff on reviews of:Energized work and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).Live commissioning and Integrated Systems Testing (IST) activities.Critical and non‑critical lifts.Temporary power, mechanical systems, and redundancy testing.Chemical, battery, and energy storage hazards.Partner with project teams to identify gaps, reinforce expectations, and drive real‑time corrective actions; ensure follow‑up items are completed promptly and tracked to closure through the safety management system. Claims Management Interview, select, and actively manage third‑party providers that support jobsite injury triage and first response.Personally evaluate occupational medical clinics and communicate preferred providers to project teams. In partnership with the Risk Manager, regularly review the performance of third‑party claims administrators and drive improvements where needed.Serve as a hands‑on resource to project teams by providing direct consultation on injury triage, first response, and incident stabilization.Ensure prompt, thorough, and well‑documented investigations are conducted following any property damage, worker injury, or significant near miss, and provide required notifications in accordance with Company and regulatory requirements.Review incident investigations with the Risk Manager and third‑party administrator and remain connected to the injured employee throughout the recovery process by coordinating light‑duty and return‑to‑work opportunities with project leadership. Incident Investigation Lead, or assign qualified facilitators to, Incident Analysis meetings following worker injuries, near‑misses, quality‑related safety events, property damage, or system failures.Personally evaluate and document contributing and root causes appropriate for complex, high‑tech construction environments.Actively share lessons learned with operations teams and partner with the Director of Field Operations to embed improvements into operational best practices, standards, and procedures.Manage owner‑required reporting, coordination with third‑party administrators, and all regulatory interactions related to incidents and claims.Oversee clinic and vendor partnerships, ensuring alignment with Company expectations and addressing the unique challenges of long‑duration and remote project sites. Training & Competency DevelopmentDevelop, maintain, and continuously improve a specialized safety training curriculum tailored to high‑hazard environments, including:Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) for complex systems.Commissioning and startup safety.Hazardous materials management and chemical permitting.Electrical safety for medium‑ and low‑voltage power distribution systems.Prefabrication and modular assembly safety.Evaluate, certify, and document required safety competencies for safety staff and project teams, maintaining accurate records within the Company’s Learning Management System (LMS).Deliver hands‑on training and mentorship to Safety Managers, Coordinators, Representatives, and project teams to strengthen field execution and decision‑making. Operational & Business SupportDevelop and maintain monthly safety dashboards for the business unit, evaluating leading indicators and trend data to identify risk and drive proactive interventions.Identify early‑warning indicators—including commissioning schedule risk, trade partner onboarding gaps, JHA quality issues, and repeat audit findings—and partner with Operations leadership to implement corrective actions after incidents occur.Communicate safety performance trends to Operations leadership and actively enforce accountability for results.Partner with Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Operations teams to integrate safety risk modeling into preconstruction planning and execution strategies. Business Development/SalesInstill confidence with clients, owners, and key influencers by demonstrating technical safety expertise, operational credibility, and visible senior‑level leadership engagement.Support business development efforts by drafting, reviewing, and strengthening safety content within proposals and presentations.Participate in client interviews and pursuits as requested, representing the Company’s safety culture and commitment to operational excellence. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:Ten (10) or more years of experience in construction safety, including a minimum of five (5) years supporting mission‑critical, industrial, or high‑hazard technology sectors such as data centers, semiconductor, pharma/biotech, EV/battery, or advanced manufacturing.Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related field.OSHA 30 and current CPR/AED/First Aid certification required.STSC and CSHT (or equivalent professional credentials) required; CHST, CSP, or CIH strongly preferred.Demonstrated expert knowledge of:Electrical safety and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) for complex, multi‑source systems.Commissioning safety, integrated systems testing, and startup hazards.Chemical management, hazardous energy control, and high‑hazard equipment.Federal and State OSHA requirements, NFPA 70E, and owner‑specific safety protocols.Proven leadership capability with the ability to influence diverse teams, drive accountability, and lead cultural change across complex organizations.Strong analytical skills with experience using safety management systems, audit platforms, and advanced reporting tools; high level of computer proficiency and familiarity with safety software required.Working knowledge of Workers’ Compensation regulations and Federal and State OSHA/WISHA requirements, with demonstrated ability to identify, assess, and resolve safety hazards; experience in claims management and incident documentation required.
