This is a permanent post 1.0 WTE covering 10 PAs based at the James Paget University Hospital working Monday to Friday. On‑call responsibility will be 1 in 5 with prospective cover for leave. The on‑call period includes all hours outside Monday to Friday from 09.00 – 17.00 hrs. The final job plan and detailed timetable will depend on experience and interests of the candidate and will be agreed with the Clinical Lead within three months of commencement. The successful candidate will be offered a 10 PA contract in the first instance; additional PAs may be available to interested applicants. The mix of clinical sessions in the final job plan and rota will be agreed after discussion with the Clinical Lead. The weekly timetable will include the following mix of programmed activities: • Direct Clinical Care (lab work, clinics, day ward, clinical admin): 8.5 PAs on average per week, • Supporting Professional Activities (CPD, teaching, research, audit, clinical governance): 1.5 SPAs on average per week Please note the JD is reviewed by the RCP and a new one will be updated. • Share workload, input to the Anticoagulant, Antenatal Haematology and Transfusion services; work as part of a multidisciplinary team., • Attend and discuss all appropriate patients at MDT meetings for Haematological Oncology and any other MDTs that may be set up., • Provide support for the pathology laboratory, which functions as part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), including attendance and participation in local and EPA level forums., • Participate in clinical meetings, postgraduate & undergraduate activities of the Trust, and offer teaching to UEA Medical Students in various modules., • Participate in the teaching & audit activities of the Department, including quality control in the laboratory., • Participate in clinical trials., • Provide a system of mutual out‑of‑hours cover for annual, study and professional leave. Short periods (up to 2 weeks) of sick leave will also be expected to be provided by the remaining consultants., • Share a 1:5 on‑call rota Band A with prospective cover. Junior and middle grade support from within haematology are first on call during the on‑call period., • Participate in Clinical Governance processes and CPD., • Contribute to management of the service and, by agreement, take on the role of clinical lead in due course., • Comply with Consultant work programme (under provisions of Circular HC90/16) and the weekly timetable of fixed commitments (i.e. regular scheduled NHS activities in accordance with paragraph 30B of the TCS). James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a rapidly growing Trust with a very bright future. The unit is very busy and contributes well to NCRN trials. There is an MDT meeting twice a week with Norfolk and Norwich Hospital on Tuesdays. Once a month there is a teleconference MDT with Addenbrookes Hospital, the allogeneic transplant centre, and a similar meeting with NNUH where our autologous bone marrows are performed. Whenever possible patients are treated as day cases and the day treatment centre (the Sandra Chapman Centre) is adjacent to the inpatient ward. The Day Centre has recently been extended and consists of single rooms and treatment chairs. It is responsible for review of patients with a variety of malignant and non‑malignant haematological patients, including acute leukaemia and patients with lymphoproliferative disorders. This is an extremely busy unit with over 4000 consultations a year. Inpatients are admitted to a ward of 17 single rooms, shared with oncology. There is no upper limit to the number of inpatients; haematology and oncology patients have priority for these beds. On average we have ten inpatients. Admission of Haemato‑oncology patients is in line with the National Acute Oncology Service guidelines. First on‑call for inpatients are dedicated middle grade haematology/oncology trainees who do a 1:4 resident cover 8 am‑8 pm. Haematology Consultant clinics take place on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. There are separate myeloproliferative, myeloma, haemochromatosis and lymphoma clinics. The anticoagulant nurse specialists have new patient clinics on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Post holder is expected to undertake both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including teaching commitments regarding the training of specialist registrars. Some anticoagulant dosing locally is currently done via the hospital anticoagulant service based on laboratory INRs, although the majority of patients are bled in the community. Dosing is via a computer dosing system (APEX). Manual dosing advice is given by the anticoagulant nurse specialists, when required. Inpatients on oral anticoagulants are also dosed by the anticoagulant nurse specialists. A fast track DVT service is run by the anticoagulant nurse specialists. There are four anticoagulant nurse specialists. There is an active Thromboprophylaxis committee and regular audit of thromboprophylaxis. One of the Consultant posts will include oversight of these services. The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratories at James Paget Hospital is managed by the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), an alliance of three hospitals including Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn. Histopathology and Cytology services are based at the Cotman Centre in Norwich. Haematology and Blood Transfusion is currently CPA accredited and MHRA compliant. The Laboratory also operates a comprehensive anticoagulant dosing service to hospital and GP patients. Haemato‑Oncology services are currently all provided at Addenbrookes Hospital in line with IOG directives which mandate the delivery of such services through an SIHMDS. The department provides a 24‑hour advice service for the hospital and local GPs, including out of hours. The successful candidate will have an office with their own desk, personal computer and secretarial support. Addenbrookes Hospital (Cambridge) is designated the principal treatment centre for this group of patients. The Norfolk, Norwich, Peterborough and Ipswich hospitals are also TYA designated hospitals. Shared care arrangements exist with these and neighbouring trusts within the region. • MBBS or Basic Medical Degree, • Full GMC Registration, • MRCP or equivalent, • Being on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register within 6 months of the date of interview., • Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice, • Knowledge of using evidence‑based medicine to support decision making, • Familiarity with conducting clinical audit, • Involvement in research projects and published papers, • Wide experience in clinical and laboratory Haematology including benign and malignant disease., • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within Haematology., • Able to plan and develop a modern service in keeping with current trends., • Willingness to participate in and lead a multidisciplinary team, balancing department and personal objectives., • Experience of committee work/project management., • Experience and special interest in acute leukaemia and myeloid disorders., • Capable of organising and prioritising work effectively., • Motivation and ability to plan and develop the service., • Willingness to participate in clinical governance., • Energy and enthusiasm and an ability work under pressure., • Experience in teaching junior medical staff., • Experience of teaching medical students., • Forward thinking and not afraid of the challenges that change brings.
