Job overview Deputy Chief Medical Officer – Clinical Transformation & Strategy for a fixed‑term contract of 3 years with up to 5 additional part‑time appointments in specialty. Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is entering an exciting period of transformation and seeks an exceptional clinical leader to join the Medical Directorate leadership team. Main duties of the job You will work with clinical teams and community partners to create sustainable improvements in patient outcomes, support trust‑wide strategic leadership, and lead change through compassionate, values‑based leadership. Key responsibilities – Digital Transformation, Digital Innovation & Culture Provide senior clinical leadership for digital transformation to improve patient outcomes, safety, reliability, and patient and staff experience. Act as a key member of the Clinical Digital Transformation team, providing senior clinical oversight and challenging digital strategy, prioritisation, and delivery. Provide clinical leadership in the preparation and implementation of the Electronic Patient Record (EPR), ensuring workflow redesign supports clinicians and enhances safety. Work closely with the CCIO, CIO, digital programme teams, and operational leaders to ensure clinical alignment in all digital initiatives. Oversee the safe clinical adoption of new technologies, including AI‑supported tools, remote monitoring and virtual care models. Champion a culture of digital inclusion and readiness, supporting clinical staff to adopt new digital practices confidently and safely. Qualifications Fully registered with the GMC with an unblemished record. Evidence of continued professional development. Qualification or equivalent experience in management, leadership or quality improvement. Trained appraiser. Evidence of continuing leadership or managerial development. Experience Substantial clinical experience at consultant level. Strong reputation as a clinician and clinical leader with a proven track record of producing high quality results. Experience in job planning, medical appraisal, and performance management. Experience developing leadership knowledge and skills in others. Demonstrated ability to lead complex cultural change with empathy, credibility and emotional intelligence. Proven ability to build trust and influence across diverse clinical groups, especially during organisational change. Active as a medical appraiser, case investigator or case manager; enhanced appraiser and MHPS experience. Sponsorship eligibility Current right to work in the UK, subject to verification.
