About the role The Project Director – BESS (FlexGen) is accountable for leading the development and delivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects through all stages — from pre-FEED and FEED to detailed design and handover to operations. This role is responsible for developing and implementing traditional and innovative engineering solutions that ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective project outcomes. The Project Director will organise and manage all project personnel, including owners, engineers, contractors, and construction teams, to deliver against technical quality, schedule, and budget requirements. They will oversee project planning, progress tracking, and resource allocation, ensuring all works are executed in accordance with company standards, governance, and sustainability goals. Key Accountabilities • Provide project management leadership across new growth and FlexGen projects, guiding the development activity of Drax Group., • Actively support both existing and new project development to enable future business growth., • Coordinate with the Project Engineering Manager to manage project consenting, planning, and strategy, ensuring all pre- and post-commencement conditions are efficiently discharged., • Manage relationships with local authorities, industry partners, and communities to maintain Drax’s reputation and social licence to operate., • Maintain and regularly review risk registers, proposing and managing risk mitigation measures., • Ensure collaboration with Finance Business Partners and Commercial Leads to provide accurate project information for financial models and budgets., • Develop and manage project development and construction budgets in line with corporate standards., • Oversee project performance monitoring, ensuring all deliverables are achieved on time, to quality, and within budget., • Coordinate mobilisation of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) teams for smooth transition to business-as-usual operations., • Resolve conflicts between project functions, packages, and EPC contractors as necessary., • Communicate project progress, performance, and key risks effectively to the Project Executive and stakeholders. Key responsibilities of the role are: • Implementing the project requirements to fully meet client specification with relevant standards., • Undertaking any work of a technical nature that falls within ability and competence., • Preparing and checking design approach, calculations drawing and documents., • Carrying out site visits and surveys, inspections and supervise sub-contractors., • Preparing and checking feasibility studies, inspection, assessment, and technical reports ensuring compliance with Amey procedures., • Being confident to work under minimum supervision and check the work of others., • Assisting with the supervision, mentoring and development of team members from Graduate Engineers and Technicians through to Assistant Engineers., • Assisting with contract preparation together with project planning and programming., • Compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation, particularly CDM regulations., • To work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, • Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme, • Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions, • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries, • Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of their workload, • Contributing to the preparation of bids and general working winning function, • Drive effective health and safety practices within the team What you will bring to us: • Developed experience and expertise within Structural engineering field, probably gained in an Assistant Engineer role or equivalent, • Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning, • Bachelors / Masters degree in Civil / Structural Engineering, • Chartered status (or working towards it) with ICE, IStructE or CIHT other appropriate professional body, • Demonstrable experience in the assessment, design and / or management of bridges, • Excellent understanding of structural behaviour and analysis, • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards such as DMRB and / or Eurocodes, • Enjoys working in a team environment; sharing ideas and collaborating with colleagues., • Proactive approach and commitment to health, safety and welfare.
