Year 1 Special Needs Assistant (SNA) Start Date: Monday, 13 April 2026 Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–12:30pm (mornings only) We are seeking a mature, experienced, and resilient Special Needs Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, and complex behavioural needs. This is a highly demanding but rewarding 1:1 role, requiring strong expertise, independence, and a calm, consistent approach. About the Role You will work closely with a pupil who requires constant supervision and a highly structured, specialist ASC approach. The role involves delivering a personalised learning programme in a dedicated group room, separate from the main classroom, following an individualised timetable. Key Responsibilities Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the morning session Deliver structured routines with clear expectations and planned movement breaks Implement specialist ASC strategies tailored to the child’s needs Manage behaviour confidently using consistent boundaries and de-escalation techniques Use declarative language approaches to reduce triggers Adapt activities in real-time to maintain engagement Communicate effectively with the class teacher, SENDCo, and parents Contribute to IEPs, reports, and EHCP processes Use SEND platforms and IT systems to track progress and create resources Attend and engage in paid in-house training Essential Requirements Minimum 2 years’ experience supporting children with ASC (and related needs such as ODD/ADHD) in a primary setting Proven experience working 1:1 with pupils with significant SEND and behavioural challenges Ability to work independently, reliably, and proactively Strong behaviour management skills and emotional resilience Excellent communication and teamwork skills Confidence using structured, specialist approaches beyond mainstream strategies Desirable Experience in specialist provisions or PRUs Training in positive handling / physical intervention Strong understanding of the UK SEND system Candidate Profile We are looking for someone who is: Calm, adaptable, and quick to learn Highly proactive with strong professional judgement Able to think on their feet and adjust approaches as needed Passionate about supporting children with complex needs Selection Process Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a morning trial, shadowing the current SNA to demonstrate their approach and suitability for the role
