Job Description Job Title: Lead Diesel Technician Job Type: Full-Time Location: 278 Secaucus Road, Secaucus, NJ 07094 Reports To: Fleet Manager Position Summary The Class A Mechanic is responsible for performing advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a diverse fleet of waste collection vehicles and related equipment, including front loaders, rear loaders, roll-offs, and transfer station machinery. This role is critical to ensuring fleet reliability, operational efficiency, and compliance with DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations. This is a senior-level, non-union position replacing a long-tenured mechanic, requiring a highly skilled individual capable of handling complex repairs independently. The ideal candidate brings strong troubleshooting abilities, a safety-first mindset, and thrives in both independent and team-oriented environments. Schedule & Compensation • Schedule: Day Shift – 5:30 AM to 3:30/4:00 PM, • Compensation:, • Salary or hourly (flexible based on candidate preference and experience), • Competitive pay – $50/hour equivalent for highly qualified candidates, • Open to top-of-market compensation for the right individual, • Position Type: Non-union Key Responsibilities • Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel and gasoline-powered refuse trucks and fleet equipment, • Perform advanced troubleshooting on hydraulic, air brake, electrical, steering, suspension, and drivetrain systems, • Complete preventative maintenance, scheduled servicing, and DOT inspections, • Utilize diagnostic software and tools to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical issues, • Conduct road tests to verify repairs and ensure safe vehicle operation, • Respond to occasional road calls and field service requests as needed, • Maintain accurate service records and complete compliance documentation, • Ensure proper handling and disposal of materials in accordance with EPA and safety regulations, • Collaborate with drivers and operations teams to resolve recurring equipment issues, • Serve as a lead technician, handling complex repairs and supporting/mentoring junior mechanics Equipment & Fleet • Refuse trucks (front loaders, rear loaders, roll-offs), • Transfer station equipment, • Diesel trucks and fleet vehicles, • Forklifts and various heavy equipment Qualifications • High school diploma or GED required; technical training preferred, • 5+ years of experience as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic (waste or fleet experience strongly preferred), • Valid driver’s license required; CDL (Class A or B with air brake endorsement) preferred or ability to obtain, • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostics, • Ability to read and interpret schematics, manuals, and fault codes, • Comfortable working both in-shop and occasionally in the field, • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and working in demanding environments Preferred Skills & Certifications • ASE Certifications (T-Series or H-Series preferred), • Experience with refuse bodies (Heil, McNeilus, Labrie, New Way), • Welding and fabrication experience, • Familiarity with diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins INSITE, JPRO, OEM platforms), • Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations Training & Support • Initial onboarding and training provided, • Ongoing support and mentorship available within the team, • Opportunity to take on a leadership role within the shop Work Environment • Primarily shop-based with occasional field service work, • Exposure to noise, grease, odors, and environmental elements, • Work performed in shop, transfer stations, and landfill environments, • Required use of PPE (gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, etc.) Benefits • Comprehensive health benefits package, • 401K, • Paid vacation and sick time, • Annual bonus program Company DescriptionWe work with you to ensure the job fits what you are looking for.
