At Houston Methodist, the Assc Chief Of Nursing, Sr Director position is responsible for working under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to create an environment in which nurses are able to perform their jobs effectively to create excellent patient outcomes and a professional nursing culture. As a member of the administration team, this position has direct operational responsibility for various departments and service, and is responsible for planning as defined by the strategic direction established by CNO and senior leadership which includes the development of policies and procedures related to practice operations, staffing models, patient safety and quality, training and customer service. The ACNO position works closely with the directors of patient care services and partners with medical staff leadership to coordinate and integrate services aligned with the strategic plan, mission and vision of Houston Methodist. This position is responsible for ensuring that patient services are in compliance with nursing care standards, evidence-based practice, as well as state and federal regulations. The ACNO position has responsibility and authority for enhancing and integrating systems, programs, support, and human resources, such as nurse recruitment and retention, across operational areas of responsibility with a particular focus on excellent patient care, staff engagement, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and integration of service delivery across the network. This position must be able to leverage technology to achieve system goals and to ensure linkages between the ancillary and acute care settings. In the absence of the CNO, the ACNO assumes responsibility for the entire scope of the CNO's responsibilities. The position responsibilities include overseeing the activities of the department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency to accomplish strategic and operational objectives. In addition, this position is accountable for employee engagement, adequate staffing levels, budget development and compliance, staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on work related performance, and developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. This position also ensures training, monitoring and operations initiatives are implemented which secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations. PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Directs, develops and implements strategic and operational/high level projects and processes either through independent/highly autonomous work or through the facilitation of work teams to enable the effective and efficient completion of objectives., • Oversees management of and ensures development for staff to meet overall objectives in terms of quality, service and cost effectiveness. Provides timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem. Directs management responsibilities of selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees., • Meets or exceeds threshold goal for department turnover and/or system metrics on employee engagement indicators., • Provides leadership and communication to maintain a competent and engaged employee group by conducting regular department meetings to review policies and procedures and operational matters, rounding on all employees, completing performance appraisals, conducting new hire feedback sessions, coaching/corrective counseling, and providing recognition/commendations to achieve desired outcomes., • Identifies opportunities and takes action to build strategic relationships between one's area and other areas, teams, departments, and units to achieve business goals. Drives the promotion of teamwork within and between departments; participates and/or leads and facilitates department process improvements as needed., • Meets with leaders of operational teams to monitor the activities of nursing practices and addresses any problems, needs or other significant occurrences that reflect the status of nursing performance. Works collaboratively with other patient care and support departments, fostering a climate of open communication and mutual problem-solving activities., • Provide leadership to nursing staff that will engage their support, create ownership of goals, and have them actively participate in decisions that impact their practice. Serves as a mentor and coach for nursing leadership, including hiring, coaching, professional development and corrective/disciplinary actions. Acts as a positive professional role-model and demonstrates adaptability to nursing trends., • Oversees department operations, designated projects, schedules and activities as needed to ensure that goals or objectives are accomplished within the prescribed time frame. Sets priorities and functional standards, giving direction to staff as necessary to ensure the best possible delivery of service and high customer/patient satisfaction., • Drives department service standards and activities to impact department and/or system score for patient/customer-based satisfaction, through role modeling and fostering accountability. Serves and actively participates on various entity committees as a voice for the department., • Coordinates/prioritizes plans through the CNO to assure organizational objectives are in line, enhancing and integrating systems, programs, support, and human resources, across operational areas of responsibility, with a particular focus on excellent patient care, staff engagement, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and integration of service delivery across the network. Maintains/initiates frequent updates to CNO routinely., • Visits department/staff units, in assigned areas, to improve visibility and communication with nursing staff. Regularly rounds on key constituents (patients, families, employees, and physicians) to solicit feedback regarding performance, needs, etc., and enhance communication, ensuring alignment that the experience is exceptional. Provides a feedback loop for all aspects of patient care to the CNO. Acts as a liaison for the CNO when immediate contact with the CNO is unavailable., • Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and/or revises the department safety plan and/or any specific accreditation/regulatory required safety guidelines. Responsible for staff maintenance of credentials and competencies, per accrediting/ licensing agency and/or department guidelines as applicable., • Employs a proactive approach in the optimization of safe outcomes and information systems by monitoring and improving the department workflow and enhancing operations, using peer-to-peer accountability and identifying solutions via collaboration. Implements process improvements utilizing tools such as lean principles. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety., • Responsible for employee compliance to policies and procedures and performs associated actions upon non-compliance (i.e., licensure/certification compliance, focal point review requirements, disaster plan, in-services, influenza immunization, wage and hour, standard hours, timely termination submission, timely timecard approval, etc.)., • Identifies system problems that may contribute to errors and monitors corrective actions to ensure effective resolution. Initiates and participates in joint performance improvement activities and that these initiatives are designed to measure and improve the quality of care delivered and are consistent with the organization priorities. Independently seeks opportunities to identify and streamline inefficiencies in clinical areas through action plans and follow-up with leaders in assigned areas., • Develops and manages department operational and capital budgets, approvals, and ongoing maintenance of the department(s), ensuring operation in a cost-effective manner. Proactively identifies and plans for capital needs related to current equipment and future department projects. Ensures staffing plans and schedules meet department needs that reflect understanding of the importance of cost-effectiveness., • Creates department strategies to achieve financial target and staffing needs, through optimizing productivity, supply/resource efficiency, minimizing incidental overtime and overtime percentage, and other areas according to department specifications., • Manages nursing expenditures and staffing resources for improvement activities, ensuring the efficient delivery of cost effective services to patients, physicians, and hospital departments, continually seeking data that will identify opportunities and takes action to eliminate non-value costs., • Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department, entity or system operations by leading unit projects and/or other department/ system-directed activities. Proactively leads task forces and committees. May represent HM at assigned community or professional organization meetings., • Drives change initiatives, maintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities or environment; adjusts effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures. At Houston Methodist, the Perioperative Nurse Coordinator position is an experienced Operating Room Nurse, serving as a clinical resource, assumes leadership responsibilities with high-level contributions in direct patient interaction, functioning at the Expert level according to Benner's model of clinical practice. This position acts as the primary liaison between other departments, vendors, surgeons, anesthesia, and Operating Room (OR) staff, assisting management with the coordination and facilitation of care, process improvement, quality initiatives, and the overall growth of the perioperative program. The Perioperative Nurse Coordinator position provides patient care as an operating room nurse circulator or in a scrub role, as needed, and assists with providing breaks and lunches for staff. This position will assist with the standardization and efficiency of care for patients in the perioperative environment, evaluating direct and indirect costs. The Perioperative Nurse Coordinator position ensures appropriate and adequate resources are allocated for scheduled surgeries, including but not limited to appropriate staffing and staff skills set, supplies, instruments, and equipment. Responsibilities for the Perioperative Nurse Coordinator position may also include serving as charge nurse, leading unit, and shared governance activities, assessing perioperative needs related to practice and improvement opportunities, coordinating unit education, tailored training for specific procedures using specialty equipment, instrumentation, and supplies. The Perioperative Nurse Coordinator acts as a role model and mentor to other OR staff and a catalyst for change to enhance patient care and outcome. PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Provides coordination and leadership for ensuring overall perioperative workflow, quality, positive patient outcomes, high level of satisfaction for all stakeholders. Assists with coordinating case observations, orientations, preceptorships, clinical rotations, and other training in the department., • Develops strong relationships with physicians, vendors, and healthcare providers to assure effective communication in patient care. Assists in managing and coordinating the effective scheduling of surgery in collaboration with OR team and Centralized Scheduling. Ensures all emergency and urgent add-on cases are communicated timely to the OR staff and other members of the team such as anesthesia, Sterile Processing staff, Pre-op, Perfusionists, ICU, Monitoring Tech, Cell Saver Tech, surgical assistants, etc. Performs frequent rounding in the operating rooms to check with and support staff, ascertain case duration timeframes, and respond accordingly. Provides input regarding OR block utilization and management., • Reviews the OR schedule in advance and addresses any potential issues and concerns. Assists with ensuring OR staff check rooms, putting away unused supplies, equipment, restocking, etc. Communicates directly with the surgeon, office staff, scheduling, vendors, and other entities to ensure everything is ready for the scheduled surgery. Validates potential revisions and accurately updates physician preference cards in a timely manner ensuring all involved staff and surgeon are aware of the changes., • Actively participates in a wide range of performance improvement activities/initiatives regarding surgery by identifying, presenting, and leading improvements in surgery or patient safety-related processes at department or hospital level. Collaborates with Quality Department and perioperative teams to identify key areas for clinical improvement, benchmarking performance against national standards where applicable, and developing actionable recommendations to enhance patient care. Works in collaboration with teams to provide solutions by participating in unit projects and shared governance activities. Role models situational awareness, using teachable moments to improve safety., • Serves as a clinical resource and leader for complex and/or highly specialized patient care situations to the Perioperative team and other health care professionals within the hospital and in the community. Provides direct patient care, as needed, as a nurse circulator or scrub role and leads the multidisciplinary team in the provision of patient care., • Identifies and promotes cost savings initiatives through active involvement and leadership with inventory management, evaluation of new products, surgeon preference card accuracy, and prevention of waste in collaboration with Supply Chain, OR team, surgeons, and others ensuring the highest quality of care is provided at the reasonable cost. At Houston Methodist, the Lactation Support Consultant position functions at the Proficient level according to Benner's model of clinical practice and is responsible for women's services patient educational needs to include breast feeding support under the general supervision of the Nurse Director. In addition to functioning as a staff nurse as needed, this position provides professional patient nursing care to a diverse patient population and is considered an expert in a specialty. In collaboration with the Nurse Director, Managers and Charge Nurses, the Lactation Support Consultant position is responsible for the quality of patient care through the provision of lactation support or education and the development of guidance for the caregivers who support the childbearing families learning needs. This position serves as a clinical resource for both unit and hospital staff and coordinates unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management. At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) PRN Labor & Delivery position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN PRN Labor & Delivery position provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The RN PRN Labor & Delivery position provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently which may include patients with varied and complex needs. At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care provided in the designated areas(s) of responsibility. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental/interprofessional collaboration. The Manager, Nursing position participates in committees, representing unit and Nursing in a positive manner. The position assists with developing and implementing performance initiatives, ensuring optimal patient safety, outcomes and customer satisfaction. At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) PRN position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN PRN position provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records.The RN PRN position provides direct patient care effectively and efficiently which may include patients with varied and complex needs.
