Job Description Position Overview Provides assistance to providers, including the attending dentist and hygienists, in the examination and treatment of pediatric dental patients, including those with developmental disabilities and/or who are medically compromised. Utilizes age-appropriate behavior management techniques and demonstrates proficiency in the treatment triangle of patient, parent and provider. Age Group(s) Served: • Neonatal (0-3 months) – limited to ICN preemie plate treatment, • Pediatric (3 months-12 years), • Adolescent (13-18 years), • Adult (18 years and above for special needs patients & college students) Essential Job Functions 1. Timely coordination of patient flow through the office/clinic, including warm and friendly greeting, patient preparation, accurate appointment making and dismissal., 2. Responsible for maintenance of dental operatory/clinic, including anticipating each provider’s needs, preparation and cleaning/disinfection of rooms, materials, equipment and instruments in a timely and efficient manner; using best practice infection control techniques., 3. Assists provider in managing patient behavior for timely and comfortable delivery of treatment. Performs retraction of lips, suction of saliva and blood and other such procedures., 4. Is competent in child friendly techniques for placement and exposure of dental x-rays for traditional x-ray and digital sensor technique (in sites where available), resulting in quality diagnostic x-rays. Is able to develop and mount traditional x-rays where applicable., 5. Sterilizes instruments and disinfects equipment and materials used in dental treatment following infection control plan, OSHA and safe handling techniques. Keeps instruments and equipment in good repair, responding appropriately when service/repairs are indicated and communicating updates to the Lead hygienist., 6. Keeps inventory of supplies and materials. Assures items are stored and maintained. Reports shortages to Lead Hygienist for ordering., 7. Performs clerical duties including but not limited to pulling patient charts, answering telephone calls, scheduling and confirming dental appointments and scanning., 8. Accurately and legibly documents and signs patient records in accordance with UPD chart documentation policy. Accurately creates patient notes, makes future appointments and posts dental procedures in EMR sites where applicable., 9. Consistent good communication up to Lead hygienists concerning any staff, resident, attending, patient or equipment issues before they escalate., 10. Complies with all quality assurance, infection control plan, OSHA, safety and other policies and procedures of University Pediatric Dentistry., 11. Understands and follows HIPAA regulations., 12. Attends all required in-services, seminars and staff meetings., 13. Other duties as requested by management in support of business needs. B. Oral Surgery Assistant 1. Prepares for Surgical day by performing opening procedures for the sterilization room and sterilizing gauze and patient linens., 2. Completes set up of oral surgery operatory to include, but not limited to equipment such as surgical motor and hand pieces, exposure chain, cementation materials and other supplies such as sterile saline, irrigation supplies, patient PPE and biopsy protocol., 3. Precise set up of sterilized oral surgery instruments prior to treatment; including separate tray set-ups of additional scalpels and specific surgical needs for individual patient treatment., 4. Accurate preparation of IV set-ups for residents., 5. Prepare for HCG testing and documentation as well as biopsy protocol as needed., 6. Skilled chair side hand off of surgical instruments, suctioning, irrigation and suture procedures., 7. Uses best practice infection control in complete breakdown of surgical room to include accurate placement of instruments in cassette, safe scalpel/sharps handling and proper disinfection and lubrication of oral surgery hand piece in preparation for sterilization. Follows complete sterilization protocol and correct wrapping technique of instrument cassettes prior to sterilization., 8. Responsible for maintenance and reporting service repair needs to Lead Hygienist for all OS equipment., 9. Assist Oral Surgeon during patient consultation by accurate review of health history, medications and surgical need. Takes accurate dental x-rays of surgical site and entering dictated notes into the patient notes. Uses intricate time management skills to facilitate patient flow during multiple consults scheduled at same time. Qualifications • High School Diploma/GED, • Basic Life Saving and/or CPR certification, • Desire to work with children is required. Experience working with children preferred.
