Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for the position of Nurse Manager within University Health Services (UHS), part of the Community Health and Well-Being Unit in the Division of Student Affairs. This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. The Nurse Manager serves as a key clinical and administrative leader within a multidisciplinary college health setting, supporting a diverse student population. This role is responsible for the supervision and development of a large nursing and medical assistant team of approximately 12 staff, oversight of clinical operations, and ensuring high-quality, evidence-based patient care. The Nurse Manager collaborates closely with the Medical Director, Executive Director, and other health services leaders and participates in divisional leadership initiatives. UHS operates within a nurse-led triage model in which nursing staff serve as the initial point of clinical contact for all patients, performing assessment, triage, and management of common medical concerns, and determining the appropriate level of care. Nursing care is delivered under established standing orders and clinical protocols authorized by the Medical Director. The Nurse Manager plays a critical role in training, supervising, and supporting staff in this advanced model of care delivery, ensuring clinical competency, sound judgment, and adherence to evidence-based protocols. Core responsibilities include: Administrative Leadership & Operations * Deliver direct supervision, mentorship, and evaluation of nursing staff and medical assistants, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment. * Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, competency validation, and offboarding processes for nursing personnel, with emphasis on clinical excellence within a nurse-led triage model operating under standing orders. * Develop and manage clinical staffing schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage and efficient clinic flow. * Lead daily clinic operations in coordination with clinical and administrative leadership. * Establish, maintain, and update nursing policies, procedures, protocols, and standing orders in collaboration with the Medical Director and in alignment with regulatory and accreditation standards. * Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local public health requirements, including reporting to applicable agencies and maintaining laboratory certification standards (e.g., CLIA-waived testing oversight). * Oversee immunization and tuberculosis (TB) compliance programs for students, including pre-matriculation and pre-college populations. * Coordinate quality improvement (QI) and quality assurance (QA) initiatives, including peer review, chart audits, and data-driven performance monitoring to support continuous readiness and successful participation in AAAHC reaccreditation. * Manage regulatory and safety programs, including emergency preparedness drills, infection control practices, and clinical competencies. * Collaborate with university partners (e.g., Health Promotion, Human Resources, Pre-College Programs, and international campuses) to support student health initiatives and compliance requirements. * Support financial and operational processes, including purchasing, expense reconciliation, and vendor coordination. * Participate in leadership meetings, committees, and planning efforts within UHS or comparable experience and the Division of Student Affairs. * Other duties as assigned. Clinical Responsibilities * Deliver direct patient care as needed in a high-volume ambulatory college health setting, including triage, assessment, and coordination of care. * Supervise and support nursing staff functioning within a nurse-led triage model, ensuring safe, effective evaluation and management of patients presenting with a wide range of common acute and chronic concerns under established standing orders. * Serve as the clinical nursing expert, guiding staff in clinical decision-making, triage prioritization, and appropriate utilization of resources and level of care. * Implement and support clinician orders, including development and implementation of nursing plans of care. * Maintain competency across core nursing functions, including but not limited to triage, immunization administration, specimen collection, and point-of-care testing (e.g., phlebotomy and other clinical procedures as required). * Oversee clinical documentation standards, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance within the electronic medical record. * Monitor patient care quality and outcomes, addressing clinical issues and implementing improvements as needed. * Support public health programming (e.g., immunization clinics, STI screening initiatives, and outbreak response efforts). * Facilitate communication and coordination of care across providers, departments, and external healthcare entities. Qualifications: * Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution. * Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. * Minimum of 5-10 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in ambulatory care, college health, or a related setting. * A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered. Preferred Qualifications * Experience with electronic medical record systems. * Experience in college health, public health, emergency/urgent care, reproductive health, or LGBTQIA+ care. * Familiarity with regulatory standards and accreditation processes (e.g., AAAHC, CLIA). * Experience leading quality improvement initiatives and using data to inform practice.
