About the Role The “My Next Move” Credible Messenger Mentor Program is a group-based mentoring program that helps young adults transform the attitudes and behaviors that led to their involvement with the criminal justice system by developing positive and appropriate relationships and supporting them in making safe decisions once back in the community. Youth come together twice weekly as a cohort of up to 12 youth, ages 12-18, with the My Next Move team supporting them. The mentors will utilize journaling and Rewire CBT techniques to support the youth to examine their feelings, evaluate their own behaviors and develop strategies for change. Mentors facilitate groups that are targeted to meet the needs of where the group and individuals are at and to ensure we are targeting services at risks identified in the YLS, as well as group builders, educational activities, anger reduction strategies, recreational outings, group-based community service activities, and family events to name a few. My Next Move supports youth who are transitioning out of JYF residential facilities (NSP and LSP) and into the community. They support youth on Aftercare in applying the tools they learned in placement to the community, in meeting their conditions of release, and in making safer decisions in the community. My Next Move mentors are responsible to handle critical incidents that occur on aftercare, responding to youths when they are dysregulated, attend court, visit youths at the precinct or hospital, or work with families during challenging moments such as assisting families during emergencies. The mentors will be included on a rotating on-call list to provide 24 hours/7 days a week support for youth. What You’ll Do The My Next Move mentor will facilitate two therapeutic groups per week (4PM-7PM) and work together with the team to prepare for dinner, group, clean-up and processing the group/individual progress. They will be available during these hours to provide one-on-one mentoring to the youth, as needed. The mentors will organize relevant group activities that include group building activities, educational activities, anger reduction strategies, motivational speakers, recreational outings, group-based community service activities, and family events based on the risk/needs/interests of the individuals and group. The mentors will also participate in family events and groups at NSP & LSP to begin relationship building and pre-engagement with potential group participants (youth in placement, prior to their release). In addition to groups, the mentors will meet with youth for individual sessions, averaging one hour per week and more as needed. They will utilize Rewire CBT techniques to engage youth and support them in setting individual goals and taking appropriate steps to meet their goals. They will also be available to provide crisis intervention and assistance in following through with the goals they have identified for themselves and/or any aftercare/court-mandated services. Provide written documentation if requested., • Bus Monitoring, • Staff are required to serve as bus monitors for young people being transported to and from school or other designated locations. This includes ensuring the safety and well-being of the youth while on the bus, monitoring behavior, and ensuring compliance with all transportation and safety guidelines., • Staff are expected to address any behavioral issues or concerns during the transport and report any incidents or concerns to the appropriate team members., • Staff are required to follow the supervision protocol while in transit and complete any necessary documentation once arriving back to the campus., • Program Delivery:, • Supervise, assist, and teach residents to perform all activities of daily living, including self-care, chores, etc., • Initiate, support and escort residents to planned recreation and other therapeutic educational activities. Look for ways to improve the daily structure, coordination, and overall program implementation. This includes driving an agency vehicle if deemed certified, as needed/expected., • Implement PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support) System fully and in accordance with training. Your Qualifications • High School Diploma/GED required., • Valid Driver's license with a safe driving record as determined by NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, • At least 3+ years of working in a Residential Treatment Center, • Experience working with children or adolescents with emotional, behavioral, or developmental disabilities in a residential, educational, or therapeutic setting., • Strong understanding of state and federal regulations governing residential treatment programs and special education services., • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, families, school personnel, and external agencies., • Ability to manage complex cases, implement treatment plans, and provide crisis intervention when necessary., • Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and therapeutic environment for all students. Summary Job Description: Parent Advocates who will support parents with children in foster care to understand and navigate the foster care system, make decisions for their families, remain hopeful, and address family challenges so that they can accomplish their goal of reunification. The focus of this job is building connections with parents and working collaboratively with case planners. Parent Advocate will be assigned to a case planning unit and will support parents and bring their experience to the foster care agency decision-making process so that children are more likely to return home quickly and safely. The Advocates will be part of the Parents Supporting Parents initiative recently launched by the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), in conjunction with Rise, a parent-led NYC advocacy organization, and other important child welfare stakeholders. All Advocates will receive training and support through Rise. This initiative is built upon the premise that Advocates with their own personal prior lived experience of the child welfare system will be effective in informing and supporting parents with children in foster care and help to improve outcomes for children and families. Principle Responsibilities: • Build relationships and support parents in coping with the trauma of foster care involvement, making decisions for their families, communicating effectively with those involved in their case, and maintaining relationships with their children during foster care placement., • Prepare parents and participate in Family Team Conferences including but not limited to Transitional, 20 Day, Six Month Service Plan Review, Trial Discharge and Final Discharge conferences., • Report to foster care unit supervisor and work alongside case planners., • Collaborate with Co-Parenting Facilitator and all service providers directly responsible for care outcomes., • Be trained by Rise as part of a group of parent advocates newly hired to work in foster care agencies, with a focus on healing and self-care; building knowledge of child welfare law, policy, and practice; building relationships for support and mentorship with other advocates; and creating an ongoing support and advocacy network., • Learn to use Rise’s TIPS handouts and resources to inform and support parents., • Be trained to facilitate Restorative Justice Peacekeeping Circles to support parents through weekly circles (meetings) at the agency and/or in community., • Become a partner in Rise’s Reunification Collaborative, working with 6 foster care agencies to improve case practice and engagement with parents in the first 90 days., • Contribute to defining and achieving success for this effort to build effective and meaningful roles for parent advocates in foster care agencies., • Recognize and celebrate parents’ progress toward reunification., • Encourage parents to engage in supportive interventions that will strengthen their families., • Help families navigate resources., • Coach parents to strengthen problem-solving skills while discovering their strengths, hopes, dreams and priorities., • Perform all other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: • Previous life experience being impacted by the child welfare system as a parent including having had a child placed in foster care or having had a court-ordered supervision case. Other prior child welfare involvement such as having personally experienced child welfare investigations may also qualify. Previous child welfare cases must be closed for at least one year., • A natural collaborator., • Warm, enthusiastic, able to engage and positively impact individuals., • Someone who has a sincere appreciation for people and how they are each uniquely motivated., • Strong interpersonal skills to assist with parent engagement and are geared towards working sensitively on topics involving trauma, stress, and healing., • Good Writing skills., • Computer skills conducting Google searches and using Microsoft Office., • Skilled at working in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects occurring simultaneously., • Passion for parent leadership and preventing child welfare involvement., • Able to maintain high level of confidentiality., • Able to travel extensively to all NYC boroughs., • Able to uphold the mission and values of Little Flower. Minimum Requirements: • Have experience as a Parent Advocate in foster care, preventive, mental health, or family defense agencies, or in any coaching or support roles in community organizations, schools, etc., • Have experience holding challenging conversations and facilitating meetings., • Bilingual skills is a plus.
