The Doe Fund and DEP have partnered to create a program that trains and employs New Yorkers to maintain rain gardens and green infrastructure that reduce flooding and protect neighborhood streets. Participants gain paid, hands-on experience for those interested in environmental maintenance and public works. The Rain Garden Crew Member supports day-to-day delivery of rain garden maintenance and stewardship services under the New York City Department of Environmental Protection contract. This role completes hands-on field work safely and reliably, following schedules and standards while documenting work performed and reporting site issues to the field supervisor. This is a temporary, seasonal position anticipated to conclude in November 2026. Responsibilities • Rain Garden Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance (planting, weeding, watering, sweeping, debris removal, sediment, landscaping, and snow removal) activities at rain gardens across assigned routes, following daily work plans and quality standards., • Safety & Work Practices: Follow required safety procedures, wear required protective equipment, and use tools and equipment safely at all times., • Tools, Equipment & Materials: Use and care for tools, supplies, and equipment; help keep vehicles, tools, and materials organized and ready for daily work., • Reporting & Photo Documentation: Complete required documentation as assigned, including logging work performed and capturing time-stamped before/after photos using mobile tools. Observe site conditions and promptly report damage, safety hazards, vandalism, missing or damaged plants, and unusual conditions to the supervisor., • Community Interaction: Participate in community events, engage and interact with the public in a professional manner, • Workforce Development Participation (if applicable): Participate in training, coaching, and progress check-ins as part of the workforce development program expectations. Qualifications • Experience: Prior outdoor work experience in landscaping, parks maintenance, sanitation, construction, or related work preferred; willingness to learn is required., • Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and perform physical work (standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs.) throughout the day., • Technology: Comfortable using a smartphone to take photos and complete simple logs as required., • Communication: Ability to communicate respectfully with crew members, supervisors, and the public., • License/Driving: Valid driver’s license preferred, required if operating program vehicles. Job Description Job Title: Custodian Classification: Full-time, non-exempt, temporary (May – September) Pay Rate: $25.04/hour Reports to: Deputy Director of Operations Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) is looking to hire full-time Seasonal Custodians. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Operations, the custodians are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of Brooklyn Bridge Park. With our established organizational mission, vision, and values, the custodians provide cleaning services with the goal of enhancing the experience of our visitors. Work involves cleaning restrooms, removing trash, maintaining floors, snow and ice removal, and cleaning all general spaces. This is primarily an outdoor position in all weather conditions (BBP provides protective weather gear including uniforms, jackets, and sun/rain protection for staff). Primary Responsibilities: * Act in a general custodial capacity throughout the park including emptying trash/recycling cans, picking up any debris, and maintaining the cleanliness of restrooms and surfaces. * Work with the maintenance and horticulture teams to perform all snow and ice removal. * Remove graffiti and report any damaged or broken park features to a supervisor. * Remove leaves, weeds, and debris from roadways, pathways, promenades, and sidewalks. * Report any rule enforcement needs to the Park Enforcement Police (PEP) and park supervision. * Provide support with the set-up and breakdown of public programs and events including folding tables, chairs, barricades, or other objects, as assigned. * Provide positive customer service to park visitors, including answering questions and conveying park information. * Stay up to speed on department tasks and updates, using cellphones and radios to communicate with supervisors. * Perform other duties as required in the scope of the job and as designated by Operations Management. Qualifications: * Hardworking, self-motivated, and dedicated to the details. * Comfortable working independently or with a team. * Adept at balancing multiple projects and tasks. * Flexible and solutions oriented. * Previous experience in custodial maintenance and/or park setting preferred. * Strong customer service skills. * Experience using custodial equipment such as leaf blowers, string trimmers, buffer machines, etc. * Physically able to stand and walk most of the day and lift 40+ pounds on a regular basis. * Strong communication skills and basic computer and cellphone knowledge. * Ability to work shifting schedules (seasonally), overtime, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
