Job DescriptionPlant Hygiene & Sanitation Manager – Job DescriptionOverview The Plant Hygiene & Sanitation Manager leads all sanitation, hygiene, and environmental control programs within a food manufacturing facility. This role ensures that cleaning and sanitation systems effectively control microbiological, chemical, and physical hazards to protect food safety, product quality, and regulatory compliance. The position provides technical and scientific oversight of sanitation chemistry, environmental monitoring, and hygienic design while developing a high‑performing sanitation team and maintaining audit‑ready standards. Key ResponsibilitiesSanitation & Hygiene Program Leadership • Design, implement, and maintain sanitation and hygiene programs aligned with the facility’s Food Safety Management System (FSMS) and hazard control strategies., • Validate and verify sanitation procedures to ensure effective control of pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms., • Oversee sanitation of production equipment, processing lines, utilities, and facility infrastructure to prevent cross‑contamination and environmental risks., • Conduct sanitation verification through visual inspection, ATP testing, microbiological sampling, and chemical concentration checks.Technical Expertise & Environmental Control, • Provide scientific oversight of cleaning and sanitizing chemicals, including detergents, acids, alkalis, oxidizers, and disinfectants., • Ensure proper chemical selection, dilution, application, storage, and disposal in accordance with SDS, regulatory standards, and environmental requirements., • Support and enhance environmental monitoring programs, including zone‑based sampling, trending, and risk‑based improvements., • Partner with chemical suppliers and internal teams to optimize sanitation chemistry for efficacy, material compatibility, and cost efficiency.Regulatory Compliance & Audit Readiness, • Ensure sanitation and hygiene programs meet GMPs, FSMA Preventive Controls, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations., • Support compliance with environmental, wastewater, and chemical discharge requirements., • Maintain audit‑ready documentation and support internal audits, third‑party food safety audits, and regulatory inspections., • Lead investigations of sanitation‑related deviations, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions.Leadership & Cross‑Functional Collaboration, • Lead, train, and develop sanitation personnel with a focus on food safety, hygiene science, and safe chemical handling., • Coordinate sanitation schedules with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering to support operational efficiency and hygienic design principles., • Promote a culture of food safety, scientific discipline, accountability, and continuous improvement., • Drive sanitation‑related continuous improvement initiatives using data, trend analysis, and risk‑based decision making.Documentation & Data Management, • Maintain accurate sanitation records, logs, validation data, and verification documentation., • Review and trend sanitation, environmental, and microbiological data to assess program effectiveness., • Ensure sanitation procedures, work instructions, and training materials remain current and aligned with food safety requirements.Essential Skills & Experience, • 5–10 years of sanitation experience in food or beverage manufacturing., • Minimum 2–3 years in a supervisory or management role., • Experience managing downtime, operational priorities, and sanitation activities around production schedules., • Demonstrated success leading corrective actions, continuous improvement, and sanitation investigations., • Strong communication, leadership, and training capabilities., • Ability to interpret scientific data and apply findings to sanitation and food safety improvements.Preferred Qualifications, • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or related field., • Relevant certifications strongly preferred: HACCP, SQF Practitioner, AIB, GMP, CIP, OSHA; PCQI a plus., • Proven sanitation leadership experience in a food or beverage manufacturing environment., • Strong understanding of microbial control, sanitation chemistry, and hygienic manufacturing principles., • Experience with environmental monitoring, allergen controls, and sanitation verification methods., • Working knowledge of GMPs, FSMA, HACCP-based systems, and audit expectations., • High attention to detail and strong problem‑solving skills., • Ability to make sound decisions in a regulated, high‑risk manufacturing environment.
