Job DescriptionJob Title: Diesel Truck Mechanic Job Description This role focuses on maintaining, servicing, and repairing a fleet of diesel waste management trucks to keep them operating safely and efficiently. You will work with mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, performing accurate diagnostics and timely repairs to minimize vehicle downtime in a high-usage environment. Responsibilities • Perform preventative maintenance on a fleet of diesel waste management trucks to ensure safe and reliable operation., • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using appropriate tools and diagnostic testing methods., • Carry out effective and timely repairs on diesel trucks, including replacing parts, components, and equipment as needed., • Conduct detailed inspections of trucks to identify potential problems before they lead to breakdowns or extended downtime., • Perform diagnostic testing on diesel engines and related systems to determine root causes of performance issues., • Repair and maintain hydraulic systems, including hoses, pumps, cylinders, and related components., • Repair and maintain electrical systems, including wiring, lighting, sensors, and control modules., • Change out worn or damaged parts and components in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards., • Perform welding tasks as needed to support repairs on truck bodies, frames, and related equipment., • Document work performed, including diagnostics, repairs, and parts used, in a clear and accurate manner., • Work efficiently to keep truck downtime low while maintaining a high standard of quality and safety., • Collaborate with a team of mechanics to prioritize work orders and ensure trucks are returned to service promptly., • Operate and move trucks and equipment safely within the shop environment as required for maintenance and testing., • Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety procedures when working around heavy equipment and waste materials., • Adapt to working on trucks that are heavily used daily and exposed to various waste materials, ensuring proper handling and care.Essential Skills, • At least 5 years of experience working as a diesel mechanic., • A minimum of 2 years of experience in mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics of vehicles., • Strong knowledge of diesel engines and diesel truck systems., • Hands-on experience with diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair of diesel trucks., • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical systems on heavy vehicles., • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems on vehicles., • Experience working with hydraulic systems, including diagnosis and repair., • Ability to perform preventative maintenance on diesel trucks and heavy equipment., • Capability to change out parts and components on trucks and related equipment., • Ability to perform welding tasks as needed for repairs (welding experience strongly preferred)., • Comfort working around trucks exposed to various waste materials and in a busy shop environment., • Ability to work efficiently and consistently to complete repairs in a timely manner., • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety when working with heavy equipment.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Trade school certification in diesel technology, automotive technology, or a related field is a plus., • Experience working on heavy equipment in addition to diesel trucks is beneficial., • Ability to work effectively in somewhat tight spaces within a busy shop., • Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with a group of mechanics., • Comfort using a variety of tools, diagnostic equipment, and welding equipment as needed.Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based in a shop environment where trucks arrive regularly with a wide range of maintenance and repair needs. The shop can become hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and you will work around trucks that are used heavily every day and exposed to various waste materials. You will be part of a team of approximately 14–15 mechanics and will often work in somewhat tight spaces around vehicles and equipment. The standard shift runs Monday through Friday from 1:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Initial training will start on a daytime schedule at 8:00 AM. One month out of the year, you will be required to work Saturdays for the entire month, with a scheduled day off during the weekday. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Modesto, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $32.00/hr.
