Head of Finance \n Borehamwood \n £77,500-£84,000 \n Permanent \n There's a point in a growing business where finance needs to move beyond producing the numbers and start actively shaping what happens next. \n That's where this role sits. \n We're working with an established wholesale and e-commerce business that has grown significantly and is now investing in the next stage of its finance function. They need a Head of Finance who can bring greater structure to reporting, improve visibility around commercial performance and give the leadership team more useful information to make decisions. \n This is a broad SME finance leadership role based in Borehamwood, with responsibility for a small team and direct exposure to senior decision-makers. \n Where you'll make an impact \n A major priority will be improving the quality and usefulness of financial information across the business. \n Rather than simply maintaining existing routines, you'll have scope to review how things are done, identify what needs changing and implement more scalable ways of working. \n Key areas will include: \n\n • Taking ownership of monthly reporting and providing clear commentary on performance\n, • Giving senior leadership better visibility over revenue, gross margin, costs and profitability\n, • Strengthening forecasting, budgeting and cash flow planning\n, • Developing reporting around inventory, stock movements and working capital\n, • Reviewing existing finance processes and removing unnecessary manual work\n, • Improving controls across the balance sheet and transactional finance\n, • Managing banking, cash requirements and wider funding relationships\n, • Overseeing receivables, payables and credit control\n, • Developing systems and automation as the business becomes more sophisticated\n, • Managing intercompany positions and reconciliations\n, • Coordinating year-end requirements with external advisers and auditors\n, • Leading, supporting and developing the existing finance team\n, • Working closely with commercial and operational colleagues rather than finance operating in isolation\n\n Because this is a wholesale and e-commerce environment, stock is central to the numbers. You'll need to understand the relationship between inventory, purchasing, margin, cash and overall business performance. \n The background that will work well \n We're not looking for someone who needs a large finance infrastructure around them. \n You'll be comfortable taking ownership, working through problems yourself and deciding what good should look like as the business develops. \n ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification would be preferred, alongside experience such as: \n\n • Leading finance within an SME or owner-managed environment\n, • Producing and improving management information\n, • Building forecasts, budgets and financial models\n, • Working with inventory and understanding stock accounting\n, • Improving financial controls and month-end processes\n, • Strong working-capital and cash-flow management\n, • Developing finance systems, reporting tools or ERP processes\n, • Managing and developing a small team\n, • Partnering directly with senior leadership\n\n Previous exposure to a wholesale and e-commerce business would be particularly relevant, but broader experience within a product, distribution or stock-heavy environment could work equally well. \n Why consider it? \n This should appeal to someone who wants more ownership than a conventional Financial Controller position but still enjoys being close enough to the numbers to understand what is really happening. \n As Head of Finance, you'll have the remit to improve the finance function rather than simply inherit it, with the opportunity to put better reporting, processes and controls in place as the company continues to develop. \n The position is paying £77,500-£84,000 and is based in Borehamwood.

We are recruiting a qualified Financial Accountant for a well-established, privately owned organisation with several trading and investment entities. It is a varied business with a small finance team, so the role offers far more breadth and ownership than you might find in a larger, more structured environment. \n You will take responsibility for the quality of the underlying accounts, making sure month-end is completed properly, balance sheets are reconciled and the financial information produced by the team is accurate and dependable. \n There is also plenty to improve. The business is reviewing its finance systems, strengthening its controls and looking at how key processes can be made clearer and more consistent. You will play an important part in that work, alongside managing the regular accounting cycle. \n The role \n Working closely with the senior finance lead, your responsibilities will include: \n\n • Managing the month-end close across several legal entities\n, • Preparing journals, accruals, prepayments and fixed asset entries\n, • Producing and reviewing monthly management accounts\n, • Completing detailed balance sheet reconciliations and resolving discrepancies\n, • Preparing VAT returns and maintaining accurate supporting records\n, • Supporting the production of statutory accounts and year-end schedules\n, • Coordinating with external accountants, auditors and professional advisers\n, • Preparing short-term cash-flow information and monitoring working capital\n, • Maintaining appropriate controls around banking, payments and user access\n, • Overseeing payroll information and reconciliations in conjunction with an external provider\n, • Supporting the transactional finance workload where necessary\n, • Improving the quality and consistency of finance procedures\n, • Helping with the selection, implementation and testing of new finance technology\n, • Reducing reliance on individuals by documenting important processes properly\n\n What we’re looking for \n You will be an ACA, ACCA or CIMA-qualified accountant with strong financial accounting experience and a willingness to stay close to the detail. \n This position should suit somebody who enjoys understanding how the numbers have been put together, rather than simply accepting the final report. You will be comfortable investigating differences, challenging incomplete information and following an issue through until it has been resolved. \n You are likely to have: \n\n • Strong month-end and financial accounting experience\n, • A good understanding of balance sheet control and reconciliations\n, • Experience preparing management accounts\n, • Knowledge of VAT, cash flow, payroll accounting and year-end requirements\n, • Experience working across several companies, cost centres or business areas\n, • Confidence using Excel and accounting software\n, • The ability to organise your own workload and meet competing deadlines\n, • A practical approach to improving systems and processes\n, • Strong attention to detail without losing sight of wider commercial priorities\n, • The confidence to work with both finance and non-finance colleagues\n\n Experience gained within a privately owned, owner-managed or multi-entity organisation would be useful, although the quality of your accounting experience and your approach to the role will be more important than a particular sector background. \n Previous involvement in a finance-system change or integration project would also be helpful. \n The environment \n This is a down-to-earth business where people are trusted to take responsibility. The finance team is relatively lean, so you will need to be comfortable switching between detailed accounting work, resolving day-to-day issues and contributing to longer-term improvements. \n The role is predominantly office-based because it works closely with both the finance team and the wider organisation. There is some flexibility, but it will not suit somebody looking for a mainly remote position. \n Why consider it? \n The attraction is the level of ownership. \n You will have responsibility for the accounting cycle, direct exposure to senior decision-makers and the opportunity to improve how the finance function operates. The business has enough complexity to keep the role interesting, but the team is small enough for your contribution to be noticed. \n It could be a particularly good move for somebody who wants: \n\n • A broader role than a conventional month-end position\n, • Genuine responsibility across several entities\n, • Exposure to systems and process improvement\n, • A close working relationship with senior management\n, • The opportunity to leave the finance function in a stronger position\n\n If you are a qualified accountant who enjoys hands-on financial control, solving problems and improving the way things are done, please apply or contact Jason Mitchell at Abbeygate Search for a confidential discussion.
