Derby City Council is seeking an experienced Lawyer to join the Licensing, Litigation, Housing & Contracts team within Legal Services on a permanent basis. As Lawyer, you will provide high-quality legal advice, representation and professional guidance to Members, senior officers and client departments across the Council. You will manage a varied caseload including licensing, housing, litigation and contractual matters, representing the Council in court, tribunals and public enquiries where required. Location: The Council House, DE1 2FS Contract: Temporary ⏰ Hours: 37 hours per week (flexible working supported; occasional evening meetings required) Directorate: Corporate Governance, Property & Procurement – Legal, Insurance & Information Governance Services Key Responsibilities: Provide high-quality legal advice, assistance and representation to Council departments. Conduct advocacy on behalf of the Council in courts, tribunals and public enquiries. Attend and advise at Council Committees, Member briefings, professional meetings and working groups. Prepare and review reports to ensure decision-makers are fully informed of legal implications. Manage a varied caseload efficiently and effectively. Contribute to policy development and ensure compliance with statutory requirements. Deliver training and guidance to Members, officers and external partners. Essential Requirements: Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive (or equivalent qualification). Current practising certificate (where applicable). Experience of providing legal advice within local government or a comparable public sector environment (or demonstrable transferable experience). Competent in the use of legal case management systems and Microsoft Office
