Job Description The Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds (HKC) is currently seeking motivated, reliable and capable individuals with a love of swimming to join the HKC Pearl River aquatics team as swim instructor/lifeguards for summer 2026. • Camp Dates: June 29 - August 14, • Pay: $4112 for the 7 weeks of camp + 19 hours of training (approx. $16/hr) ABOUT THE JOB You'll spend the summer working at our three pool complexes ensuring the safety or all swimmers, campers and counselors alike, as they swim and make use of the pools. Half of the day, each member of the aquatics team serves as a swim instructor, teaching swim according to the American Red Cross curriculum. The other half of the day is spent lifeguarding. HKC will provide the curriculum and train you in how to teach swim. Job DescriptionDescription: POSITION SUMMARY: Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Requirements: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Be identifiable with YMCA Lifeguard shirt, whistle, swimsuit and has the rescue tube with them. The Rescue tube must be properly worn, with the strap on the shoulder and holding it in front of the body., • Actively apply and enforce all pool rules and proactively address members to maintain a safe environment., • Knows, understands, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area., • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area. This includes standing at the edge of the pool or using the elevated lifeguard chair, actively looking at the water and swimmers, staying alert and scanning from one end of the pool to the other by moving their head side to side every 10 seconds., • Must sit in an alert position and does not lean or recline in a resting position while on duty., • Minimize all distractions that may interfere with effective scanning, such as not engaging in extended conversations with other staff or members., • Must be skilled in observing the behavior of swimmers in the water and be ready at all times to stop dangerous behavior., • Move to another area when multiple lifeguards are on duty to ensure appropriate zone coverage of the pool., • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with emergency action plan and provide first aid care when needed., • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff., • Perform equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed., • Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and throughout shift., • Be 5-10 minutes early to every shift and record time worked correctly with limited mistakes., • Must find coverage if unable to attend a shift. Contact must be made ahead of time if a scheduled shift cannot be worked., • Flexibility, may be asked to substitute for other employee’s shift or work beyond assigned shift in an effort to ensure safety and proper coverage., • Mandatory attendance for in-services and rescue drills. In-Service meeting will be scheduled in advance. Rescue drills may or may not be scheduled without prior notice., • Certifications: Current Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification as required by the NJ State Bathing Code., • Acceptable Lifeguard Certification may be from YMCA or American Red Cross, • Acceptable CPR may be from American Heart Association CPR/AED or American Red Cross CPR/AED, • Acceptable FA Certification may be from American Red Cross FA or National Safety Council, • Oxygen Administration certification from American Red Cross preferred, • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness. Under the supervision of the Recreation and Sports Program Manager, the Swim Instructor will follow the YMCA Swim Lesson Program guidelines, ensuring all participants have a fun and secure learning experience. Our YMCA facility features a dynamic Aquatics Center that includes a competitive pool, a recreation pool, a hot tub area, and a state-of-the-art viewing gallery which attracts area swim teams for large meets. Essential Duties include: • Instruct swimming lessons as assigned, preparing engaging lesson plans., • Build positive relationships with members and participants, providing motivational support., • Encourage involvement from members and parents, identifying potential volunteers., • Supervise students consistently, ensuring their safety and providing assistance as needed., • Share information about our aquatics programs and schedules, referring participants to other offerings as appropriate., • Maintain accurate records (attendance, progress reports, etc.)., • Adhere to all YMCA policies and emergency procedures, completing incident reports when necessary., • Arrive on time, in proper uniform/equipment, ready for each shift., • Attend scheduled staff meetings and training sessions., • Organize and maintain class equipment, reporting any damages., • Train and supervise class aides as needed. Your typical day could include monitoring the pool deck during pool operation hours, checking water quality and maintaining safety environment. ABOUT YOU You are a safety minded, customer service-oriented person with previous lifeguarding experience, who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. You have the ability to communicate clearly and pride yourself on your excellent customer service skills and strong work ethic.
