Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II supports a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting by performing high-quality specimen collection and handling, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This role ensures accurate and efficient blood and specimen collection, labeling, processing, and documentation while providing clear, courteous communication to patients and clinical staff. Responsibilities • Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment., • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, ensuring comfort and understanding., • Demonstrate and apply proper phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles., • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately to ensure correct patient and test identification., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders., • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy., • Package specimens for transport, following all protocols to maintain specimen integrity., • Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol for each test., • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures according to established guidelines., • Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or documentation., • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements., • Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to authorized individuals to satisfy inquiries, following applicable procedures., • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and quality standards., • Attend required annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations., • Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality., • Support training activities by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed.Essential Skills, • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required., • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting., • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles., • Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures., • Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy when matching requisitions, labels, and specimens., • Ability to understand and accurately follow physicians’ laboratory orders., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite., • High school diploma or GED., • 2–4 years of overall work experience.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • At least 6 months of hands-on phlebotomy experience, including venipunctures in a clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment., • Experience working in a fast-paced setting with multiple priorities and time-sensitive tasks., • Strong communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and to interact effectively with clinical staff., • Ability to handle telephone inquiries and read laboratory results accurately to authorized requestors., • Familiarity with safety, decontamination, and specimen integrity protocols., • Commitment to ongoing training and adherence to departmental standards and procedures.Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that requires frequent patient interaction and close collaboration with clinical and laboratory staff. The position involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for data entry and documentation. Work includes standing for extended periods while performing blood draws and specimen collection, handling biological specimens, and following strict safety, OSHA, and DEP regulations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Wichita, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
