Job Description Operation Kindness Humane Society is a pioneer in Texas for assisting animals in need of veterinary care, companionship and most of all, a home. We operate a lifesaving animal welfare organization, helping pets and people. We are seeking an Lifesaving Care Tech- in Training to join our team (located at Operation Kindness HUB -located in Dallas near I-30 and N. Westmoreland Rd) This position is 40 hours per week. The schedule is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. (7am to 6pm) We provide a fun and rewarding work environment with excellent benefits. Both weekend days and holiday availability is required. Spanish speaker a plus! Hourly employees receive time and a half pay if scheduled to work on 10 company designated holidays. Details about the role: REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Lifesaving Partnerships Hub Manager POSITION OVERVIEW: The Lifesaving Care Technician in Training, or LCT IT, is responsible for providing care for Operation Kindness animals at the Lifesaving Partnerships Hub. The Lifesaving Care Technician in Training is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment, as well as following proper procedures for disease prevention and sanitation. This position will also provide support for rescue partners with their medical appointments and boarding reservations, which may include loading, unloading, and restraining. Additionally, this role will provide support for the Operation Kindness Transport Team with animal transports, which may also include loading, unloading, and restraining. As part of the Community Initiatives team, the Lifesaving Care Technician in Training will play an integral role in helping to support our goal of assisting pets from local shelters, as well as helping pets and their owners in the community. The LCT IT position is in training to become a Lifesaving Care Technician within a year of their start date as a LCT IT. The HUB Manager and Lead Livesaving Care Techs will facilitate the training and development of the LCT IT. The LCT is responsible for completing all training requirements and milestones. Phase 1: Animal Care and Kennel Tech Training Phase 2: Basic Medical Care Training Phase 3: Intake Evaluation Exam Training POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Summary of General Responsibilities: • Report suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to the Lifesaving Partnerships Hub Manager immediately., • Report any unsafe working conditions to the Lifesaving Partnerships Hub Manager immediately., • Maintains client, donor, and staff confidentiality at all times., • Follow Standard Precautions and other safety regulations at all times., • Complete all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with Operation Kindness policy., • Attend staff meetings, as required. Summary of Essential Job Tasks: • Clean and sanitize all animal enclosures and the kennel areas per our Standard Operating Procedures., • Maintain cleanliness throughout the day by removing messes in a timely manner., • On a weekly rotation, deep clean to sanitize kennel areas top to bottom., • Maintain cleanliness and organization of other spaces in the kennel areas, as well as storage spaces, and common use spaces., • Clean, maintain, and remove waste from outside play yards and surrounding areas., • Clean, sanitize, and organize outside storage area for portable animal crates., • Clean other shelter areas and/or equipment as requested or assigned., • Clean and sanitize all food, water bowls, and toys., • Wash, fold, and restock laundry., • Feed all animals in our care at least twice daily according to the color-coded measuring system., • Ensure that all animals always have access to fresh, clean water., • Be aware of special/prescription diets, special feeding instructions, and follow the directions laid out for them., • Administered necessary medications, twice daily., • Report any unusual or sickly behavior of any animal at the Hub exhibits., • Assist Lifesaving Care Technician IIs with animal evaluation by providing animal handling and restraint., • Walk and exercise all dogs regularly throughout the day., • Assist team members with completing daily play-groups per our Standard Operating Procedures., • Complete movement of animals from one kennel to another as needed or assigned., • Ensure that all animals are properly identified and that all cages and kennels have cage cards., • Assist in loading/unloading transport animals., • When needed, help the Community Initiatives Outreach team and/or assist with Pet Pantry appointments., • When closing for the day, perform security checks, ensuring that all animals are secure, clean, not in stress, and properly bedded down., • Make sure necessary doors are closed and lights are out., • Additional, relevant tasks as assigned by the Lifesaving Partnerships Hub Manager. Physical Effort: Position requires lifting and carrying animals and shelter materials weighing up to 40 lbs; when animals or materials weigh over 40 lbs, another staff member will assist in the lifting and carrying. Position also requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time and speaking over the telephone. Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and animal diseases. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Each LCT IT is expected to follow the training program, manual, and requirements as presented by Lead LCTs and the Hub Manager. Each phase will take 3-4 months, and the full training time will take up to a year. Phase 1: Animal Care and Kennel Tech Training During this phase, LCT ITs will learn the cleaning, feeding, and walking policies and procedures at the Hub, as well as receive basic level behavior and handling training. Here are the skills developed during this phase: • Cleaning dog enclosures are the Hub, • Walking and Feeding dogs at the Hub, • Dishes and Laundry procedures at the Hub, • Basic PetPoint skills, such as updating location history and animals profile information, • Animal handling training, • Completion of the Fear Free Certification Phase 2: Basic Medical Care During this phase, LCT ITs will learn how to administer basic care medical needs to the animals at the Hub, including vaccines, blood and fecal tests, and preventions. Here are the skills developed during this phase: • Medicating animals at the Hub, • Mixing, drawing, and administering vaccines, • Administering microchips, • Administering flea/tick and heartworm preventatives, • Fecal testing, • Blood drawing and testing, • Entering medical information into PetPoint Phase 3: Intake Examination Evaluation During this phase, LCT ITs will learn how to complete an intake exam evaluation from start to finish. Here are the skills developed during this phase: • Entry of medical information into PetPoint, • Completion of intake exam eval, including physical exam, vaccine administration, test administration, and task administration, • Entry of intake exam eval into PetPoint, • Proper scheduling of future medical care items into PetPoint, • Passing of the LCT Test Final Exam: Lifesaving Care Tech Once all three phases are complete and signed off in the training manual, the LCT IT is required to take and pass the Lifesaving Care Tech final exam. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Education Requirements • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent relevant work experience Experience Requirements • One year of part-time or full-time work experience, • Previous shelter experience a plus Physical Requirements • Requires occasional lifting and carrying animals and shelter materials weighing up to 40 lbs. Requires frequent walking and handling of dogs and cats of a variety of sizes and temperaments., • Requires frequent and extended periods of standing and walking., • Ability to drive company vans/vehicles., • May be exposed to unpleasant odors and noises.
