Job Description Job Title: Shop Helper – Motor and Generator Service & Repair Job Description This role supports a busy motor and generator service and repair shop by assisting skilled trades with the breakdown, cleaning, repair, and overhaul of industrial motors and generators. You will work hands-on with tools and equipment, help move and prepare parts for repair, and learn the complete overhaul process while building a foundation to grow into a skilled trade position such as mechanic, welder, machinist, painter, or winder operator. Responsibilities • Assist skilled trades in breaking down, repairing, and overhauling motors and generators from the field., • Receive motors and generators into the shop, help disassemble units, and prepare components for inspection and repair., • Clean and inspect parts using hand tools, power tools, washing equipment, and sandblasting equipment in the wash bay., • Load parts into heat treat ovens and varnish tanks according to established procedures and safety guidelines., • Support senior technicians by gathering parts, tools, and materials needed for overhaul and repair work., • Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to safely move motors, generators, and components throughout the shop., • Assist with basic assembly, production, and troubleshooting tasks under the guidance of experienced technicians., • Work closely with mechanics, welders, machinists, painters, winder operators, and quality control personnel to support ongoing projects., • Follow instructions, shop procedures, and safety protocols, including the proper use of PPE and safe operation of tools and equipment., • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including cleaning workstations, equipment, and parts as needed., • Use tape measures and basic measuring tools to verify dimensions and assist with layout and fit-up., • Contribute to quality by reporting issues, defects, or irregularities to senior technicians or quality control., • Demonstrate initiative by asking questions, seeking training opportunities, and learning the full overhaul process to prepare for advancement into a skilled trade. Essential Skills • At least 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment or service repair shop., • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with mechanical components and rotating equipment., • Hands-on experience with material handling in a shop or industrial setting., • Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools for disassembly, cleaning, and basic assembly tasks., • Experience or ability to learn operation of forklifts and overhead cranes for moving heavy parts., • Ability to read a tape measure accurately and use basic measuring tools., • Effective communication skills to work closely with a variety of skilled trades and follow detailed instructions., • Willingness and physical ability to work in hot, physically demanding, and sometimes dirty environments., • Demonstrated initiative and a strong willingness to learn and grow into a skilled trade. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working in a service or repair shop focused on pumps, motors, or other rotating equipment., • Background as a junior-level mechanic, automotive or industrial, is highly beneficial., • Ability to read and understand blueprints or basic technical drawings., • Familiarity with sandblasting, painting, or winder operations is a plus., • Basic troubleshooting experience in a repair or production environment., • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are highly valued., • Proven reliability, strong work ethic, and a safety-first mindset., • High level of motivation to cross-train and progress into roles such as mechanic, welder, winder, painter, or machinist. Work Environment The role is based in a medium to large service and repair shop spread across two buildings that share a parking lot. The facility is non-climate controlled and reflects the nature of heavy industrial repair work: organized but not pristine, with older equipment and active wash bay, sandblasting, and heat treat areas. Work in the wash bay, sandblasting area, and near the heat treat oven can be extremely hot, especially during the summer months, and the work is physically and mentally demanding. The team includes approximately 38 employees across both buildings, including mechanics, welders, machinists, painters, winder operators, quality control staff, and helpers who collaborate closely on projects. Helpers typically start in the most physically and mentally challenging areas to build skills and resilience. Standard hours are on a day shift from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime common and total hours often exceeding 50 hours per week. Saturday work is frequently available as a half day. The dress code requires steel-toe footwear, jeans, a work shirt, and safety glasses, with additional protective gear such as full protective suits worn as needed during sandblasting or painting operations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX 77053. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.00/hr.
