Job Description YOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT Broome Street Academy Charter High School (BSA) is seeking to hire a Head of School beginning in July 2026. BSA serves NYC students who are the most at risk and face significant barriers to graduation. By design, 50% of the seats for upcoming 9th graders are set aside for students who are homeless, in foster care, or have otherwise had experience with the child welfare system. Given the extensive needs of BSA’s students, the model – which is unique among New York City charter schools – goes above and beyond the classroom through a formalized partnership with The Door, one of the country’s premier youth development organizations. BSA is housed within The Door so that students have facilitated and consistent access to The Door’s complete range of programming on site including: reproductive and primary healthcare and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal advice and representation, tutoring and homework help, college preparation services, job training and placement, supportive housing, sports and recreational activities, arts, and nutritious meals – all for free, completely confidential, and under one roof. Broome Street Academy was born out of The Door’s 2009 strategic plan as a response to the growing needs of New York City’s at-risk youth. In February 2026, BSA’s charter was renewed and extended through July 31, 2031. Subsequent charter renewal will be contingent on high academic and post-secondary outcomes. Broome Street Academy now seeks a next generational leader, to formally solidify our current model, build deeper systems of instruction, pedagogy, and data-driven decision-making, and stand out within the educational landscape of New York City. We have laid a strong foundation in the wake of post-COVID learning loss and are executing on a multi-year plan to drive transformative outcomes for every student. We are looking for a Head of School who will continue our progress on that plan to realize the ambition of BSA’s model. ACADEMICS & LEARNING BSA’s model merges a rigorous academic curriculum with comprehensive social and learning support to prepare students for a successful future beyond high school. BSA’s academic model was designed in recognition that some of our students require extra support to reach the same academic milestones and post-secondary pathways as their peers. We intentionally maintain small class sizes and offer integrated co-teaching in most classes to provide additional academic support for students. The student-centered approach includes a continuum of academic support as well as opportunities for more rigorous learning to ensure that each student is being challenged to their full potential. By offering targeted academic intervention for students who need additional support, along with advanced coursework such as College Now, and Advanced Placement classes, students at all skill levels are being continuously challenged and thoroughly supported. Social-emotional support and learning opportunities are also incorporated into the school day and available after school. In addition to the distributive academic counseling and social-emotional lessons offered through Advisory sessions, BSA has three social workers on-staff, and strategically works to take advantage of the relationships students can make with staff in a relatively small school that emphasizes community and academics together. GOVERNANCE The Head of School will report to BSA’s CEO and Board of Trustees. The Board and CEO establish policy for BSA in accordance with its by-laws and consistent with the terms of its charter. The Board meets twelve times per year, once each month. The Head of School will be expected to attend Board meetings and most Board committee meetings as well. The Charter School Institute of the State University of New York serves as BSA’s authorizer. THE POSITION The Head of School will administer the 9th-12th grade curriculum and will be responsible for promoting the mission of the school as well as overseeing the daily operations in partnership with staff. They will be responsible for oversight and development of all academic programs and curricula; the faculty and staff hiring; professional development, compensation, and all other personnel matters; and student recruitment, enrollment, attendance, and discipline. They will also oversee budgeting, financial management, compliance, development, and management of school facilities in partnership with the CEO. Key responsibilities include: Academics & Instructional Rigor • Provide instructional leadership by maintaining and improving high academic achievement standards including the implementation of a rigorous student assessment program aligned to state standards., • Analyze key sources of data to identify instructional priority areas, develop strategies to tackle pedagogical and programmatic challenges, set academic goals, monitor progress, and adjust strategies to ensure continued growth., • Continue to improve promotion rates for students who are, on average, entering BSA’s ninth grade with math and reading scores at the 5th and 6th grade levels., • Build a strong, cohesive staff and leadership team and hold primary responsibility for professional development, staff observations, staff communication, and program decisions., • Build a staff and student culture focused on accountability, integrity, and excellence., • Lead admissions staff to plan and execute a strategy to achieve annual school enrollment of approximately 200 students., • Ensure effective student recruitment strategies. Secure and strengthen “feeder” relationships with foster care agencies, NYC not-for-profits, and key middle schools., • Develop and implement strategies for attendance improvement and drop-out prevention., • Fully advance and integrate the BSA/The Door partnership and capitalize on The Door’s resources. This includes programming, data sharing and analysis, and cultural alignment., • Skillfully build and manage the budget, which is approximately $6 million, and oversee daily operations of the school, including safety, student support, behavior management, and finances., • Work with the CEO to externally message BSA via social media and traditional media platforms. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will have prior experience in school leadership – as a head of school, principal, or division head at a charter, traditional public, or independent school – and teaching experience. The Head of School should possess a strong understanding of the use of academic data to inform and improve student outcomes and an awareness of developments in the broad worlds of education and pedagogy. An ideal candidate will also have a track record of achieving significant school improvement and in working with and leading student and community populations similar to that of BSA. A Bachelor’s degree is required. The successful candidate may hold a master’s degree or higher in Education, Education/Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Work, or a related field or have commensurate youth development leadership experience. Job Description About the Role: The Coach serves as a consistent, long-term strategic partner for young people, navigating the critical transition from adolescence to economic independence. Operating through a "whole-person" lens, the Coach manages a dedicated caseload of 15–20 participants, providing unwavering support from age 14 through 21. Job Description Looking for a part-time afterschool program tutor with a great work ethic that is able to tutor in math from grade 1 to grade 12. This program is in-person at our location in Long Island City, N.Y. Classes are small (6-10 students) and grade-level specific. Afterschool program includes homework help in all subjects as well as enrichment lessons in math. Applicant must be able to create short lesson plans daily using our materials and resources. Job Summary: Fair Futures Coaches are full-time, trained professionals who are matched with up to 10-15 young people ages 13 and older who have had experiences with the justice system. Coaches meet young people “where they are” and build a trusting relationship with them using an authentic, trauma-informed, and strength-based approach, often in partnership with colleagues at our Non-Secure Detention program. In addition to providing weekly emotional support, Coaches help young people make progress toward their academic, career development, housing/independent living, and other life goals. When a young person is unsure of their goals/interests, Coaches help them explore and expose them to potential opportunities. They then help young people connect to schools, programs, and opportunities that align with their goals/interests, encourage persistence in those settings, and plan/prepare for the next step on their journey. Coaches celebrate young people’s progress; if something doesn’t work out, Coaches help young people reflect and connect to the next opportunity. Work 1:1 with young people to develop academic and career development goals based on their interests and strengths to take measurable steps toward their goals, • Connect young people to quality schools, programs, resources, and opportunities in line with their goals, • Connect young people to peer group support and build positive relationships, • Help young people persist in these settings, navigate any challenges that arise, celebrate successes, and plan/prepare for the next step on their journey, • Should youth be unsuccessful in any school/program setting, Coaches assist young people to reflect on the experience and work with them to set new goals and transition to the next opportunity, • Collaborate with Interdisciplinary team guardians to help youth achieve academic, employment, and vocational goals, • Ensure young aging people can access and maintain stable, affordable housing and build independent living skills., • Establish, at least twice monthly, face-to-face contacts with the youth and weekly contacts (via phone, text, email)., • Provide weekly, ongoing social/emotional support., • Build relationships and collaborate with the key adults in the young person’s life to support their goals and well-being, including other agency staff (e.g., Case Planners and Specialists), foster parents, school/program staff, and other significant adult figures., • Help young people explore their interests and expose them to opportunities in line with their interests., • Re-engage disconnected youth and help them re-enroll in an academic setting, • Assess the fit between the young person and their current academic setting and help them transfer into a better-fit high school or high school equivalency (HSE) program if needed?, • Visit the young person’s school/program and build relationships with school staff, review transcripts and academic data, provide educational advocacy, and discuss progress towards graduation/HSE obtainment, • Ensure young people are attending school and have the supports and resources they need to be successful, such as tutoring, individualized educational plans (IEPs), 504 Plans, or other special accommodations, • Expose participants to post-secondary pathways, such as college and/or accredited vocational programs, starting in the 9th grade (or as early as possible);, • Assist students with post-secondary planning, along with the guidance counselors and/or College Specialists and Career Development Specialists;, • Connect the student to the College Specialist to apply to colleges, opportunity programs, and all forms of financial aid, funding, and scholarships;, • Provide college persistence coaching, including ensuring students are receiving all of the financial and academic support they need to succeed each semester;, • Collaborate with all relevant partners, such as Case Planners, guidance counselors, Youth Development Counselors, Social Workers, Tutors, teachers, family members, caregivers, mentors and other additional supports. Career Development Duties: • Assist young people in obtaining working papers, if needed., • Conduct career exploration activities with young people., • Assist young people in selecting at least one career development experience each year that is in line with their interests and academic situation/background., • Work with the young person and Career Development Specialist to identify potential longer-term career pathways based on the young person’s interests, strengths, and academic/vocational plans., • Connect the young person to the Career Development Specialist, if needed, to explore workforce development programs and vocational programs and for assistance with job applications., • Connect young people, as needed, to agency-based job readiness and/or internship programs, • Provide persistence coaching to young people enrolled in any external program by checking in with them regularly., • Attend and participate in agency training, ACS training, and NYC DOE training., • Keep case records and accurate data information up to date, including but not limited to school visits, home visits, community visits, and visits with parents/guardians, by documenting in Connections within five business days of the event., • Promote and model the 7 Sanctuary Model commitments and the SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss, Future) Model into daily practice to create a non-violent and trauma-informed culture., • Complete transitional discharge education/employment, career, and vocational plan., • Bachelor’s degree required with two years of experience working with vulnerable youth in a residential setting, or youth involved in the child welfare system preferred., • Knowledge of the Juvenile Justice & Criminal Justice system., • Experience working with justice-involved youth., • Knowledge of the NYC Dept. of Education, including alternative education/vocational programs (Pathways to Graduation, ACCESS-VR, YABC, etc) , NYC Dept. of Youth and Community Development programs, and the College application process, and, • Experience with providing 1:1 support to youth in care, preferably in a residential setting., • Ability to be flexible to the demands of the youth in care, • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team, • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, • Strong time-management, organizational skills, and attention to detail;, • Ability to troubleshoot, advocate, and navigate obstacles where there is not always a clear-cut pathway;, • Open to learning how to use and interpret data to inform decision-making;, • Ability to effectively collaborate in team settings and build relationships with external partners;, • Ability to use Motivational Interviewing techniques, trauma-informed techniques, and to facilitate therapeutic peer groups., • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus, but not required, • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Office, Connection Citrix, and Excel Good Shepherd Services is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, participants, volunteers, subcontractors, and vendors.
