This course provides an interactive, project-based introduction to comic creation as both a storytelling medium and a visual art form. Students develop original characters and narratives while learning foundational comic structure, page layout, and illustration techniques. Instruction should be age-appropriate and inclusive, with a focus on creativity, communication, collaboration, and iterative improvement. The instructor will deliver instruction across a typical 10-week cycle, with pacing adapted to student needs and site logistics. What You Will Teach Students will learn how to plan and produce a comic or short graphic narrative from concept to final draft. Depending on grade level and available resources, learners may create comics using traditional materials (pencil/ink, paper) and/or digital tools (school-approved apps for drawing, layout, or publishing). Lessons emphasize story planning, scripting, panel composition, visual clarity, and revision processes. Major Topics Can Include • Comic conventions and visual storytelling fundamentals, • Character design (appearance, traits, goals, motivations), • Plot structure (beginning/middle/end, conflict, pacing), • Scriptwriting basics (scene planning, dialogue, narration), • Paneling and page layout (flow, composition, framing, perspective), • Speech bubbles, captions, lettering, and readability, • Visual techniques (expressions, body language, action lines, tone), • Inking, shading, and finishing techniques (age-appropriate), • Storyboarding, drafting, peer feedback, and revision cycles, • Deliver a 10-session course with clear objectives and engaging, hands-on instruction, • Lead students through the full creative process from concept development to a finished comic artifact, • Provide technique demonstrations and structured supports for varying skill levels, • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment aligned to site policies, • Facilitate constructive peer feedback routines that emphasize respect and growth, • Communicate professionally with site staff and Concorde program contacts regarding attendance and session completion tracking, • Minimum of 60 college credits (or Associate degree in progress/completed), • Experience with comic creation, illustration, visual storytelling, creative writing, or a related field, • Experience working with school-age students in structured settings (school, camp, after-school, tutoring, youth programs), • Strong facilitation skills, clear communication, and comfort leading creative projects, • Reliable, punctual, and professional; able to follow school policies and program boundaries, • Comfort supporting students with traditional and/or digital creation tools, depending on site resources
