Education Requirement: * Bachelor’s degree required with preference in Education, Psychology, or Social Work * At least 18.0 credit hours from an accredited college or university in the field of Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation or a related field preferred Experience Requirement: * Minimum of three (3) years experience in urban education, youth development or community organizing with at least one (1) year of supervisory experience. * Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with youth & adolescents in New York City. Position Summary: The Dance Activity Specialist will lead engaging and inclusive dance classes for elementary school students (grades K–5) in an after-school program setting. The specialist will plan and facilitate lessons that are culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate, and accessible to students with varying skill levels. The role emphasizes fostering creativity, building confidence, and promoting teamwork through dance. Reports to: Program Director Compensation: $30-$45 an hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is an in-person position for the school year from September through June with potential rehire for summer and the following year. Responsibilities: • Supervise all activities to ensure the health, safety and well-being of program participants., • Develop and implement lesson plans that introduce students to a variety of dance styles and techniques (e.g., hip-hop, ballet, modern, cultural/folk, creative movement), • Create a culturally responsive environment that honors and reflects the diverse backgrounds of students., • Incorporate skill-building activities that progress over time, culminating in a student showcase or performance, • Manage classroom and maintain positive learning environment., • Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication and overall attitude., • Ensure proper care of all spaces and materials, organize room and report any misused or damaged materials to the Program Director., • Complete and submit in a timely manner all program reports relative to this position, including but not limited to: supply request, lesson plans, incident reports, attendance, and timesheets., • Assist Program Coordinator with ordering and maintaining equipment and/or supplies., • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings and special events. Qualifications: • Experience teaching dance to elementary-age children in school, camp, or community program settings., • Minimum of 2 years of academic preparation in dance or creative movement, or equivalent training., • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities, people and projects effectively., • Experience in providing individualized and group instruction to meet the needs of youth with various level of skills., • Experience designing and teaching courses to ensure youth success and supports youth-centered learning., • Demonstrated knowledge of teaching dance including but not limited to Hip-Hop, African Dance, Latin, Jazz, Modern, Ballet, and Lyrical to elementary-school youth with an emphasis on skill building, recreation, and development., • A genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice., • Comply with School Age Child Care (SACC) requirements including background check and medical clearance. The Comprehensive Afterschool System (COMPASS) of NYC program serves young people enrolled in grades K-12. SONYC, which stands for Schools Out NYC, is the COMPASS middle school model that serves as a pathway to success for youth in 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Structured like clubs, the model offers youth choice in how they spend their time; provides rigorous instruction in sports, arts and youth leadership. NYC becomes the classroom through trips and opportunities for instruction beyond the traditional facilities. Programs are offered 5 days per week during the school year. Services are also offered during the summer months. This specific outreach operates under the SQPA umbrella through use of its facilities, programming and thought leaders. ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES The Activity specialist should have an interest in working with youths. They should show expertise in one or more disciplines or content-specific program activities or subjects such as dance, drama, STEAM, sports (typical and playground games), or other activity or subject that enriches the experiences of children and youth.The Activity Specialist is responsible for creating age-appropriate activities and to also monitor student progress. The Activity Specialist also provides academic support to meet the specific needs of students. The instructor will be responsible for developing lesson plans and implementing activities in accordance with the safety rules and regulations that coincide with departmental rules, regulations, and safety practices.
