Javits Center. Reporting directly to the site Farm Manager, the Assistant Farm Manager supports a range of production activities, including crew management, greenhouse propagation, bed preparation, cultivation and harvest, packing vegetable orders, compost management, pest and disease treatment, and occasional infrastructure projects. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE SENIOR MAINTENANCE MANAGER The Senior Maintenance Manager supports the Property Manager in the overall operation and upkeep of the HKC facility, with a strong focus on preventive maintenance of landscaping equipment, small engines and vehicles, such as ATVs, UTVs, golf carts and trucks. This role is responsible for assisting with landscaping and field management, as well as the routine inspection, servicing, and repair of buildings and grounds. There is a cycle to the work based on the season (winterizing in the fall, planning and deep cleaning or repair in the winter, preparing for camp in the spring, and maintaining in the summer) but there are always regular tasks to be done regardless of the season. Each week brings its own challenges, and adjustments will always need to be made based upon the weather. As a hands-on position, on any given day the Senior Maintenance Manager might be mowing, painting, repairing a vehicle, handling a water or sewage issue, removing trash or blowing leaves and using such equipment as backhoe, tractor, skid steer or ride-on deck mower. Job Description POSITION SUMMARY Learning Gardens brings year-round, field and school-based garden science learning to NYC school children and community members. Our gardens are outdoor classrooms that provide vibrant green space in some of New York City’s most densely populated neighborhoods. We operate three gardens in three boroughs. Using our four community gardens, CPF presents engaging interdisciplinary lessons to expand student learning around urban ecology, horticulture, soil science, and sustainable urban food systems. Students in 2nd – 8th grade and their teachers receive resource materials, curricula, and tools to enhance their understanding of ecosystem services and address the unique challenges of growing food in an urban environment. High School interns are trained in garden instruction and horticultural techniques throughout the spring and then work alongside Learning Gardens staff throughout the summer. The Seasonal Garden Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day field operations in our main Learning Gardens located in Brownsville, South Jamaica, and the South Bronx. This includes garden maintenance, repairs, coordinating volunteer events, and assisting the community gardener program. The ideal candidate will be an excellent time manager, able to multitask, very well-organized, and an effective communicator. This is a seasonal, 8-month position reporting to the Director of Education and assisting the school day and internship program managers. The Assistant Farm Manager will report to the Farm Manager. The Assistant Farm Manager will be responsible for helping to manage all day-to-day operations at their respective site, including: directing, training, and managing staff; crop planning, and management of seeds and supplies; propagating crops in the greenhouse; cultivating and harvesting field crops; planning and packing crops for our community partners, CSA, and wholesale accounts; soil management, pest control, irrigation maintenance, and management of on-site composting; implementing food safety protocols; helping with data collection and recordkeeping; coordinating with onsite and offsite team members; helping with infrastructure projects and maintenance; winterizing the farm as the season winds down; and maintaining a clean, organized, and safe space across the rooftop.
