Job Description Allient - Rochester (formerly ORMEC Systems, Inc.), a subsidiary of Allient Inc., specializing in motion control products and engineering services, including motion controllers, servo drives, motors, and electro-mechanical motion control and automation solutions is currently seeking a highly skilled and ambitious engineering leader to join our Rochester, New York team! Allient Rochester’s Director of Engineering is a key leadership role responsible for driving engineering innovation, program execution, and team development. This is a hands-on role that manages a team of hardware/power electronics, firmware/software, mechanical, and control engineers, technicians and technical professionals, providing both strategic oversight and hands-on technical guidance in an entrepreneurial/small company environment where you will also have the opportunity to contribute directly to the design of our next generation of motion control products. With a deep understanding of power electronics, embedded control systems, electro-mechanical system design, mechanical packaging, and manufacturing processes, the Director of Engineering will play a critical role in advancing Allient’s technology and product roadmap, ensuring that product development aligns with business objectives and customer needs. Responsibilities: • Serve as a senior leader in strategic planning discussions, providing engineering insights that impact corporate decision-making and future growth initiatives., • Contribute to business budget planning, ensuring alignment between engineering investments, product development costs, and overall company financial objectives., • Lead and develop the engineering team, setting clear objectives, fostering innovation, and mentoring engineers to drive technical excellence., • Establish departmental standards, priorities, and output expectations, balancing strategic oversight and hands-on leadership., • Provide hands-on guidance to the team in the design, development, and testing of motion control products (e.g., servo drives), electro-mechanical subsystems (e.g., stages/actuators), and integrated solutions (e.g., UL-508 box build with Codesys application programming services) while ensuring manufacturability, reliability, and performance. Your expertise in power electronics and embedded systems design in motion control applications will be crucial in every step of the process., • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, optimizing engineering efficiency, product performance, and cost-effectiveness., • Oversee new product development and introduction (NPD/NPI), utilizing Stage-Gate methodology to ensure disciplined execution., • Assign and manage engineering project workflows, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and meeting customer expectations., • Define and track engineering KPIs, including time-to-market, cost efficiency, and product/technology performance metrics., • Collaborate with sales, marketing, and manufacturing teams to align product development with customer requirements and market trends., • Serve as a subject matter expert in power electronics and embedded control systems engineering, providing guidance and individual contributions on design, simulation tools, and mechanical implementation., • Conduct detailed circuit design, simulation, and analysis to optimize product performance, including power and control/logic electronics., • Develop and implement innovative system- and component-level control algorithms for a variety of power electronics applications., • Evaluate circuit topologies and circuit components through simulation and analysis., • Develop detailed power and control electronics models to investigate and verify the algorithm’s robustness and performance across the entire operating space., • Support failure analysis, design verification, and manufacturing work instructions, ensuring a seamless transition from prototype to production., • Troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical, embedded software, mechanical, and system level issues in motion control systems and applications., • Develop and implement testing protocols to validate the functionality and reliability of designs., • Participate in engineering builds and full-rate production when necessary to validate designs and quality standards., • Provide cost estimates for new products and redesigns, factoring in engineering resources, labor, and materials., • Work closely with operations, quality, and supply chain teams to optimize manufacturing processes and supplier partnerships., • Develop risk management frameworks to proactively identify and mitigate risks in design, fabrication, and testing, • Actively contribute to customer and supplier engagements, supporting technical sales discussions and problem resolution., • Recruit, train, and mentor engineering team members, building a high-performing culture that values innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement., • Lead succession planning and employee development initiatives to strengthen technical capabilities within the team., • Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred)., • 10-15 years of power electronics and embedded controls experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role., • Strong knowledge of power and control electronics, embedded software, and electro-mechanical design principles applied in advanced industrial and medical applications., • Experience in hands-on leadership roles, combining direct application of subject matter expertise to product development initiatives with coaching, development and leadership of cross-functional teams., • Proven track record of designing and optimizing DC/DC converters, inverters, and switch-mode power supplies (SMPS)., • Strong understanding of thermal management, EMI/EMC compliance, and safety protocols for high-power systems., • Familiarity with PLCs, embedded controllers, motors, and electromechanical systems and applications., • Familiarity with FPGA design., • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications; primarily MS Excel, Word and Power Point., • Expertise in PLM systems (e.g., BlueStar) and engineering aspects of ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics 365) to manage engineering changes, deviations, BOM structuring, etc., • Proficiency with design and simulation tools (e.g., Altium Designer, MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE, LTSpice)., • Experience with project management, product development and collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft Project, Jira)., • Knowledge of industry standards (IEC, UL, CSA) and safety requirements.
