Why You’ll Love This Role • Lead the entire construction accounting function for impactful civil, utility, and power projects that keep California moving., • Partner closely with operations leadership and project managers, gaining a true seat at the table on project strategy and performance., • Build and develop a high-performing accounting and compliance team with clear roles, structure, and growth opportunities., • Drive process improvement, technology adoption, and better reporting to elevate visibility, accuracy, and decision-making across the organization., • Enjoy comprehensive benefits for you and your family, along with a 401k with company match and a discretionary bonus tied to company success.What You’ll Do, • Develop and grow the accounting team by elevating technical skills, clarifying responsibilities, and standardizing processes to improve accuracy, efficiency, controls, and real-time reporting., • Lead day-to-day construction accounting operations, including job cost accounting, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, and union payroll interfaces for California projects., • Manage the capture, analysis, and allocation of all project costs including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, trucking, and rentals across civil, utility, and power jobs., • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, WIP, cash flow) that clearly reflect project and company performance., • Direct month-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and revenue recognition using percentage-of-completion methods., • Design, implement, and maintain accounting policies, internal controls, and procedures tailored to heavy civil and utility construction operations., • Lead the compliance function overseeing lien releases, preliminary notices, subcontractor insurance, certifications, and all required owner, agency, and prime contract documentation., • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, contract requirements, and internal financial policies, proactively identifying and resolving control or process gaps., • Coordinate internal and external audits, including detailed job cost and WIP reviews., • Prepare and review job cost and variance reports, enabling operations and leadership to act quickly on margin trends and project health., • Partner with project managers and operations leadership to forecast final costs, monitor margins, and assess overall project profitability., • Support contract review and negotiation from a financial lens, ensuring pricing, terms, and commitments are correctly reflected in job cost systems., • Oversee and approve owner billing packages (AIA/progress, T&M), ensuring accuracy, strong backup documentation, and timely collections., • Monitor receivables, lead collection efforts, and escalate payment issues to leadership when necessary., • Develop, track, and present KPIs such as DSO, WIP accuracy, and margin performance to management., • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting workflows and leverage technology and ERP capabilities to improve efficiency and financial reporting., • Serve as a strategic financial partner to operations leadership on cash flow planning, forecasting, and broader business planning initiatives., • Compliance Group Leadership, • Provide hands-on leadership, coaching, and development for both accounting and compliance team members., • Oversee contract compliance, certified payroll support, subcontractor prequalification, and documentation management for public and private work., • Champion adherence to company ethics, business conduct standards, and regulatory requirements, and lead training and standardization of best practices across teams.To Be Successful in This Role, You’ll Bring:, • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred., • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience in construction, with direct exposure to heavy civil, utility, or power projects., • Proven experience managing accounting operations and compliance within a construction environment., • Proficiency with Foundation or a similar construction ERP/job cost accounting system., • Background in contract financial review, vendor management, and cost control for multi-project environments., • Deep understanding of construction accounting principles, job cost control, WIP reporting, and managing financials across multiple concurrent projects., • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to clearly explain financial data and trends to non-financial stakeholders., • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working across departments., • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, and complex formulas) and a highly organized, detail-focused working style aligned with values of safety, quality, teamwork, and innovation.Excellent Benefits, • Kaiser (or equivalent) health care insurance for employee and family., • Dental and Vision insurance for employee and family., • Paid Sick Leave., • Vacation., • 401k with 4% match.
