The Gentle Barn is seeking a reliable, hands-on Maintenance Technician who will ensure the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of our facilities while also supporting basic animal care as needed. This role is critical to maintaining a safe environment for both people and animals. The ideal candidate is proactive, accountable, and aligned with our mission of kindness and compassion. This is a full-time, on-site, Monday – Friday position. RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintenance & Facilities • Perform daily inspections of property, barns, fencing, machinery, vehicles, and public areas, • Complete repairs including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general upkeep, • Maintain tractors, tools, equipment, and utility vehicles, • Ensure all walkways and guest areas are clean, safe, and hazard-free, • Respond quickly to urgent repair needs, especially those impacting animal safety, • Maintain organized storage areas and inventory of tools and supplies, • Coordinate with leadership on larger repair projects and outside vendors, • Perform all other duties as assigned, • Job description may be modified at the discretion of the organization Safety & Compliance • Follow and implement all safety protocols and OSHA guidelines, • Ensure proper handling and storage of chemicals and tools, • Maintain clean and safe working conditions across all areas, • Participate in safety walkthroughs and corrective action follow-up Animal Care Support – Provide support as needed to the Animal Care team to ensure adequate coverage based on operational needs • Assist animal care team with feeding and watering when needed, • Support cleaning of barns, stalls, and animal areas, • Help Animal Care team move animals safely, • Monitor enclosures to ensure safety and security of all animals, • Report any concerns regarding animal health or behavior immediately, • Assist with emergency situations involving animals or facilities QUALIFICATIONS: • 5+ years of maintenance or facilities experience, • Possess basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general repairs, • Experience with welding and/or tree trimming work is a plus, • Experience with small engine repair and diagnostics, • Experience using small tools, • High school diploma or equivalent (GED), additional apprenticeship or trade school education is a plus, • Must be able to lift over 100 lbs. and perform physical labor daily, • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, • Must be highly organized, with the ability and desire to maintain a clean and orderly environment, • Must be able to hook up and driving with trailers, • Proficient in using ticketing system to track, manage, and resolve requests, • Must be available for urgent or emergency needs when required, • Experience working around animals preferred, not required, • Strong work ethic, reliability, and follow-through, • Ability to communicate clearly and work as part of a team, • Gentle and kind person who cares deeply for animals and people PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: • Perform work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain, • Lift, carry, and move heavy materials and equipment (often 100+ lbs), including tools, lumber, feed, and supplies, • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods throughout the workday, • Safely operate hand and power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment, • Perform repairs and upkeep on barns, fencing, shelters, and other structures across uneven terrain, • Work in close proximity to large animals while maintaining awareness and adherence to safety protocols, • Handle repetitive tasks and physically intensive labor, including digging, hauling, and debris removal, • Maintain stamina and physical agility to navigate a large outdoor property efficiently PERKS & BENEFITS: • Comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, • Retirement plan, Flexible Spending Account (FSA), and Employee Assistance Program (EAP), • Paid time off, including vacation days, personal days, sick leave, and paid company holidays, • Supportive, mission-driven culture focused on compassion, collaboration, and well-being
