A Senior Project Water and Wastewater Engineer at H2M architects + engineers oversees and mentors staff engineers and develops and executes water/wastewater design work for both public and private clients. As well as coordinates efforts of both in-house and outside teams that handle architectural, structural engineering, MEP design, and civil engineering services. This role is offered at two levels: Senior Project Engineer 1 and Senior Project Engineer 2, reflecting increasing independence, technical responsibility, and decision-making authority. With over 90 years of experience in water and wastewater engineering, H2Ms water and wastewater team designs and implements drinking water treatment systems, distribution networks, wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, and collection systems. We support water districts, municipalities, and regional authorities in meeting regulatory requirements and improving system reliability and environmental performance. Our work protects public health, enhances sustainability, and ensures essential services remain resilient for the communities that depend on them. Key Responsibilities Key Project Leadership & Management • Manage and lead medium to large infrastructure projects from inception through planning, design, permitting, bidding, and construction., • Oversee project scope, schedule, budget, and delivery to meet established performance goals., • Function as Project Manager with responsibility for technical production, team coordination, and overall project execution., • Prepare and manage cost estimates, project schedules, and design tasks to ensure on-time, on-budget completion., • Lead construction administration and supervise construction observation efforts. Technical Engineering & Design • Plan, design, and oversee construction of water and wastewater conveyance systems, including pipelines, pump stations, storage facilities, treatment systems, and related infrastructure., • Prepare comprehensive engineering construction packages, including drawings, specifications, and bid documents., • Perform detailed engineering analysis and calculations, leveraging design software to solve complex technical challenges., • Lead planning and design efforts for water supply, treatment, distribution, and wastewater systems. Permitting, Bidding & Regulatory Coordination • Prepare and deliver permit applications to local, state, and federal regulatory agencies., • Assist clients with public and private bidding procedures and participate in bid evaluations., • Coordinate project execution with internal technical divisions, external partners, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities. Client Engagement & Business Development • Support the preparation of proposals, including technical writing, scope development, and budget preparation., • Engage directly with municipal, industrial, and private-sector clients to support project development and ongoing relationships., • Participate in marketing planning, client presentations, and interviews for prospective projects., • Represent the firm through outreach to technical societies, industry groups, and trade organizations. Team Leadership & Mentorship • Supervise, mentor, and support engineering and design/drafting staff, fostering technical development and project excellence., • Lead multidisciplinary project teams and build the team's overall technical capabilities. Education & Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering or related field of study., • 10+ years of progressive experience in the planning, design, permitting, and construction of municipal water and wastewater infrastructure, including conveyance systems, treatment facilities, and pump stations., • Senior Project Engineer 1: 10 to 12 years of engineering experience with a focus in water/wastewater projects., • Senior Project Engineer 2: 12 to 15 years of engineering experience with a focus in water/wastewater projects., • P.E. license in the states H2M does business, or ability to gain reciprocity, • Experience working on both public and private water/wastewater projects., • Proven background in delivering multi‑discipline infrastructure projects and navigating NYSDOH/NJDEP permitting processes., • Experience preparing, reviewing, and approving engineering proposals, drawings, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates., • Demonstrated experience overseeing projects through commissioning and startup phases., • Proficiency with engineering software and tools required for design, analysis, and project delivery., • Ability to mentor and train junior engineering and technical staff., • Active participation in relevant industry organizations (e.g., AWWA, WEF) preferred., • Strong data analysis and technical problem-solving abilities., • Strong interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and client relationship management skills. Additional Requirements • This role requires some travel. Business-related travel may involve visits to project sites, professional events, client locations, and other H2M offices and may require the use of a personal vehicle., • This is an exempt, salaried role that may occasionally require flexibility outside standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and select holidays, to support project schedules, client needs, and business priorities.
