Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Southend Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 (DOE) + Profit-Related Bonus Hours: 37.5 per week (8:30am - 5:00pm) Permanent An established and design-led British manufacturer is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Research & Development team. This is a hands-on role within a collaborative, non-hierarchical engineering culture focused on quality, innovation, and long-term product development. The Role You will contribute to the full mechanical design lifecycle - from concept development and prototyping through to production and ongoing product support. Working across multiple concurrent projects, you'll design precision components and assemblies while ensuring manufacturability, cost efficiency, and adherence to core design principles. Key Responsibilities Mechanical concept design for new and existing products 3D modelling, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings with GD&T in SolidWorks Designing for machining, injection moulding, extrusions, sheet metal, stamping and 3D printing Hands-on prototyping, testing, and design refinement Ongoing design revisions, cost engineering and DFM improvements Design of machinery, jigs and fixtures Transition of legacy drawings into CAD and PDM systems Supplier liaison and manufacturability reviews Supporting product implementation into production About You Strong natural understanding of mechanical design principles Proficient in SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD software) Experience designing for a range of manufacturing processes Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability Strong communication and sketching skills Comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative Benefits 20 days annual leave, increasing by 1 day per year of service Free on-site restaurant (breakfast and lunch provided daily) NEST pension scheme Annual profit-related discretionary bonus Large, open-plan office within a collaborative engineering environment Standard hours: 8:30am - 5:00pm (37.5 hours per week) The Environment You'll be joining a close-knit, team-based organisation that values open communication, collaboration and continuous improvement.
