HMRC's Taxes, Benefits & Enterprise Operations Platform Team is seeking experienced Technical Architects to help shape the future of our critical national tax infrastructure. The team manages and oversees suppliers responsible for operating and delivering services on the Enterprise Tax Management Platform (ETMP)-a core component of the UK's Critical National Infrastructure-and HMRC's corporate IT services through the Enterprise Operations Platform (EOPS). The team forms part of the Chief Engineering and Platform Office (CEPO) within the Chief Data and Information Office (CDIO) Directorate. HMRC is currently undergoing one of the largest transformation programmes in government to modernise and future proof its IT estate. As part of this, we are evolving one of the public sector's most complex SAP landscapes, moving from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA on Sovereign Cloud. Our Technical Architecture team plays a central role in this transformation-defining and governing technology strategies, designing end to end architecture, and steering large scale change across a dynamic, high value environment. Working across multiple programmes and services, the team develops strategic roadmaps and ensures technology decisions align with HMRC's long term objectives. Job description The Technical Architect will play a pivotal role across multiple Product, Platform, and major project teams, providing expert technical leadership and architectural guidance. The postholder will bring deep knowledge of enterprise technologies, with a particular focus on SAP S/4HANA on sovereign cloud, as the organisation undertakes a major system conversion from the current SAP ECC platform. In this key role, you will support the design, development, and transition to the new strategic platform, ensuring that solutions are robust, secure, and aligned to the wider end to end technical architecture. You will also contribute to business as usual activities, including shaping proof of concepts and developing innovative solutions that enable reliable operational delivery. While you will bring strong expertise in your specialist areas, the role requires a flexible and adaptable approach, balancing priorities and supporting a diverse range of services as organisational needs evolve. Person specification Technical Leadership & Architecture • Lead the technical design of systems and services, articulating and justifying design decisions throughout the development and implementation of the new SAP S/4HANA platform., • Provide architectural oversight across integrations, ensuring end to end solution integrity across SAP modules and connected systems., • Drive the execution of S/4HANA migration activities, including development, testing, and deployment of SAP and non SAP integrations., • Support system integration testing (SIT), user acceptance testing (UAT) and contribute to detailed cutover planning to ensure a smooth transition to the new platform., • Oversee and produce high quality documentation, including technical specifications, configuration guides, and integration mapping artefacts., • Act as a bridge between business requirements and technical implementation, ensuring alignment between functional needs and technical solutions., • Work closely with internal HMRC teams, systems integrators (SIs), and vendors, ensuring cohesive delivery, effective issue resolution, and successful outcomes., • Ensure service assurance and proactive risk management, identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks throughout the delivery lifecycle., • Pension - We make contributions to our colleagues' Alpha pension equal to at least 28.97% of their salary., • Family friendly policies., • Personal support., • A name-blind CV including your job history., • UK nationals, • nationals of the Republic of Ireland, • nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK, • nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members of those nationalities with settled or pre-settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) (opens in a new window), • nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members of those nationalities who have made a valid application for settled or pre-settled status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS), • individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible to apply for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020
