Job Title: Field Technician (Southern Region). Discipline: Hydrogeology, geology, hydrology, hydrometrics. Location: Flexible within south midlands region. Basis: Mixed field / site based with hybrid working, occasional office attendance (Wolverhampton). Term: Permanent. Hours: Full time. Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience). Benefits: Fully expensed company 4x4, pension, training / progression opportunities etc. Our Vacancy: The technical water management consultancy services BCL provide, and the client operations we support, are wholly reliant upon the collection, collation and interpretation of quality hydrometric data. We therefore have, at the heart of our operations, a small, dynamic and highly capable team of field-based technicians, who venture across the full breadth of the British Isles, in all weathers and all environments, to gather the professional standard primary field data our company, and clients, depend upon. An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to join this essential and growing team. Ideally based in the south of the midlands region, the successful candidate will travel across the south of the nation to a mixture of greenfield and active aggregates / landfill developments, gathering data that will then be digitised, processed, interpreted and archived, via remote (home) working, and regular (typically weekly) office attendance (Wolverhampton). The role will also involve input into wider operations undertaken by the company, including large scale field trials, drilling supervision, and providing supporting input to technical (desk based) assessment. This is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to start a career in environmental consultancy, who wants to avoid a ‘9-5’ desk job, and is actively seeking regular field work, who still wants the opportunity to apply their degree in their employment. Our Company: BCL are an experienced independent hydrological and hydrogeological consultancy principally serving the aggregates and construction industries, though also offering our services to a wider client base. We help our clients overcome operational obstacles relating to water management and aid them in navigating related regulatory constraints, principally relating to planning, permitting, licensing and related consents. Our purpose is to guide sustainable and efficacious water management practices, this to the benefit of our clients and the wider environment, by providing pragmatic and cost-effective solutions to the inevitable conflicts that arise between societal and environmental needs. Our People: At the desk or in the field, it is the innovative and technically minded nature of our staff, their experience, dedication and solution-focused attitude, that allows us to meet the needs of our clients. We see our people as our greatest asset, and believe in enabling, empowering and supporting them towards reaching their full potential, to the benefit of the company and their individual careers. We do this not just through training, support and regular social events, but by offering tailored progression, encouraging innovation and providing a fair, open and honest working environment. We inclusively seek like-minded individuals, who share our passion for the water environment, love of the great outdoors, and free-thinking, self-starting, problem solving ethos. About You: The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree in geology, environmental science or a related discipline, and will be proficient in word processing and spreadsheet packages. Experience in GIS, field data collection, the use of data logging equipment / software and working within a strict health and safety environment is preferred though not essential. The role will suit a technically minded, innovative and practical individual with good time management skills and a talent for problem solving, who is happy working outdoors as well as within an office environment. The position will require the successful candidate to undertake regular business driving throughout the UK and ROI (with occasional overnight stays). A full current driving license is therefore an absolute requirement for the role. As the role requires operation of off-road vehicles, such a license must cover the operation of manual transmissions. Please note that, though this is a graduate role, and requires an enquiring and scientific mind, it involves application of both mind and body. The nature of the work is varied but can be physically demanding. At least an average level of fitness is required, together with a high level of resilience.
