Job Description Position Summary This position is responsible for the screening, evaluation, and distribution of donated ocular tissue for transplantation and for research/education. The Laboratory Services Technician ensures that all tissue suitability and donor eligibility requirements have been met according to Georgia Eye Bank Standard Operating Procedures, Eye Bank Association of America Medical Standards, and U.S. Food & Drug Administration regulations. All responsibilities should be performed within the scope of GEB’s mission and values. Responsibilities: • Coordinates with Donor Coordinators to facilitate and perform recovery of tissue in the Georgia Eye Bank service area., • Maintain professional communications with donation partners and other agencies (e.g., OPO, tissue banks, coroner/ME/GBI, funeral homes, hospitals, etc.)., • Review donor medical records, physical assessments, and other relevant documentation to determine donor eligibility and tissue suitability., • Complete required documentation and perform data entry., • Delegates/determines the status of each donor file as it relates to potential placement for transplant, research, or educational purposes., • Evaluate tissue with slit lamp, specular microscope, and OCT., • Clean, sterilize, and maintain instruments/equipment as needed., • Perform routine laboratory cleaning, equipment maintenance, and supply restocking., • Coordinate with internal and external researchers to identify and fulfill research tissue requests according to approved study protocols., • Offer and allocate ocular tissue to approved surgeons, researchers, and partner eye banks based on established criteria and clinical need., • Process and preserve ocular tissue using appropriate chemical fixatives such as formalin, paraformaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, and ethanol-based solutions, following all safety data sheets (SDS) and chemical hygiene plan requirements, • Facilitates new researcher application, approval, and orientation process., • Facilitate onboarding, credentialing, and safety orientation of new research partners and ensure adherence to ethical and biosafety standards., • Responsible for maintaining accurate researcher and research institution contact information., • Responsible for providing complete and accurate documentation necessary for the billing of research tissue., • Adhere to GEB Standard Operating Procedures, EBAA Medical Standards, and FDA regulations., • Participate in staff meetings, continuing education, and performance improvements to support GEB’s mission in transplantation, research, and education., • Assist Quality Systems staff with quality improvement initiatives., • Assist in developing and refining research and tissue-handling protocols to enhance specimen quality, integrity, and scientific value, • Provide mentorship and training to new laboratory staff, interns, or visiting researchers on dissection, evaluation, and documentation procedures., • Become a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) should the requirement exist., • Communicate with public/professional relations staff to ensure delivery of superior Eye Bank service and efficient operations., • Assist the Laboratory Services Manager in other various assigned duties. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree (four-year college or university) preferred; relevant work experience may be substituted for academic requirements (candidates with education/experience in nursing, surgical technology, laboratory research, and pre-med viewed favorably)., • Ability to professionally interface with peers, physicians, researchers, and hospital personnel on assignments., • Knowledge of the principles of slit lamp, specular microscopy, aseptic technique, medical terminology, and medical chart review., • Knowledge of the principles of microbiology and sterile techniques as they relate to eye banking., • Must be able to perform detailed work under a microscope for extended periods with precision and focus., • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)., • Detail-oriented, • Superior organizational skills, • Ability to handle multiple stats in a dynamic and fluid environment., • Positive and friendly demeanor. Ability to receive feedback with openness and adaptability., • Ability to work independently as well as be a member of a team., • Willingness to work weekends, nights, and holidays when necessary, • Must have a valid driver’s license and insured automobile.
