This role provides senior-level technical expertise for IBM MQ messaging infrastructure on z/OS mainframe systems, supporting mission-critical messaging services used by multiple California state agencies. The consultant will partner closely with CDT technical teams to ensure the stability, performance, and reliability of enterprise MQ environments. In addition to hands-on technical support, the role emphasizes documentation, knowledge transfer, and mentoring to strengthen long-term operational readiness. This position functions as senior technical staff augmentation within the State’s enterprise data center environment. Key Responsibilities IBM MQ Infrastructure Support Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain IBM MQ on z/OS mainframe platforms Monitor queue managers, channels, and message flows to ensure high availability and performance Troubleshoot and resolve MQ-related production incidents Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, and patch management Architecture & System Optimization Review MQ configurations and overall messaging architecture Identify performance risks and recommend improvements Support MQ software deployments and environment upgrades Assist with system changes while maintaining operational stability Operational & Production Support Provide ongoing remote and onsite technical support Conduct system diagnostics and root-cause analysis Maintain and enhance MQ operational processes and procedures Documentation & Knowledge Transfer Develop and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures Provide training and mentoring to CDT technical staff Share best practices related to MQ administration and messaging design Reporting & Collaboration Produce weekly status reports outlining completed work, issues, and risks Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams on messaging solutions Participate in technical planning and continuous improvement initiatives Mandatory Qualifications Candidates must meet all of the following requirements: IBM MQ z/OS Administration Minimum 5 years of experience installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting, and maintaining IBM MQ on z/OS MQ Operations & Monitoring Minimum 5 years of experience managing queue managers, channels, message flows, and system performance Incident Resolution Minimum 5 years of experience resolving MQ-related incidents in enterprise production environments Messaging Architecture Support Minimum 5 years of experience collaborating with application teams to design and implement MQ-based messaging solutions Infrastructure Maintenance Minimum 5 years of experience with capacity planning, upgrades, patching, and performance tuning Documentation & Procedures Minimum 5 years of experience creating and maintaining technical documentation and runbooks Desirable Qualifications The following are preferred but not required: Strong verbal and written communication skills Experience training or mentoring junior technical staff Background supporting large enterprise or government environments Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced infrastructure setting Proven success working in cross-functional technical teams Work Environment Standard 40-hour work week Occasional work during maintenance windows or weekends Work performed remotely and/or onsite at CDT facilities as required Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a senior mainframe messaging specialist with deep expertise in IBM MQ on z/OS, strong troubleshooting abilities, and experience supporting mission-critical enterprise messaging environments, preferably within government or large-scale organizations.
