You assist with blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, support troubleshooting and workflow improvements, and help maintain a smooth, efficient, and safe laboratory environment in a fast-paced setting. Responsibilities • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner., • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols., • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, ensuring they understand each step and feel comfortable., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and prevent errors., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and laboratory protocols., • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing., • Package specimens for transport, following all procedures needed to maintain specimen integrity during transit., • Store specimens at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling them according to protocol., • Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols to ensure specimens remain viable and compliant for testing., • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and support general upkeep of equipment and work areas as required., • Update patient information accurately and promptly in the appropriate systems or records., • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and specimens are collected., • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner., • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations to maintain a safe and compliant work environment., • Attend annual department trainings and stay current with updated procedures, safety requirements, and best practices., • Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency., • Float between multiple locations and provide coverage where needed, supporting operational and staffing needs across sites. Essential Skills • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required., • Minimum of 1 year of active working experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting., • Proficiency in performing venipuncture and blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles., • Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures., • Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders., • Ability to accurately update patient information and maintain clear, organized records., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite., • High school diploma or GED., • 0–2 years of overall work experience, with at least 1 year actively performing venipunctures., • Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations., • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to inquiries. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment., • Comfort with handling and processing various specimen types, including urine and fecal samples., • Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians’ orders for laboratory testing., • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, orders, and tasks simultaneously., • Willingness to attend ongoing departmental trainings and adapt to updated procedures., • Flexibility to float between multiple locations and provide coverage based on operational and staffing needs. Work Environment This is a Float position that supports multiple locations, including sites in Suffern, Nanuet, New City, New Rochelle, Yonkers, and Tarrytown, with the expectation that you remain flexible and willing to assist at other locations outside the primary territory as operational needs arise. You work in a fast-paced laboratory and patient service center environment where you routinely perform venipuncture, specimen collection, labeling, centrifugation, and packaging using standard laboratory equipment and computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, with start times as early as 7:00 a.m. and end times as late as 5:30 p.m., and includes every other Saturday with similar early start times. You follow strict OSHA and DEP safety regulations, participate in annual departmental trainings, and work in a setting that emphasizes accuracy, patient care, and adherence to established laboratory protocols. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
