Job Description Position Code: FSM-FSD-LAND-N Position Title: Landscaper Department: Facility Services FLSA Type: Non-Exempt Position Reports to: Assistant Director, Facility Services Direct Reports: Landscaping Contractors Minimum Qualifications: 1. High School Diploma or equivalent., 2. Have a valid North Carolina driver’s license., 3. 5+ years’ experience in horticulture, landscaping, or another grounds-related field. Preferred Qualifications: 1. Have a minimum of an Associate degree in horticulture, landscaping, or other grounds-related field., 2. Have repair and preventive maintenance experience on all landscape and grounds-related equipment., 3. Capable of operating a tractor. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills., 2. Have grounds maintenance experience in a heavily landscaped setting requiring turf care., 3. Able to drive a tractor and use heavy equipment and machinery., 4. Able to schedule seasonal pesticide deterrence in order to have identified areas of concern treated., 5. Have repair and preventive maintenance experience on all landscape and grounds-related equipment., 6. Have experience in budget preparation and execution., 7. Punctual and accountable with a positive attitude., 8. Initiative, drive and ability to think creatively and put ideas into action to improve grounds., 9. Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills., 10. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines., 11. Competent computer skills that include Microsoft Office products and a work order system., 12. Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality., 13. Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college., 14. Ability to work with hand tools and all landscape and grounds-related equipment., 15. Ability to participate in safety training and to comprehend and practice the training in the course of carrying out work duties., 16. Be a reliable, responsible, tactful, resourceful, and trustworthy person with a sincere interest and concerned attitude toward the college. Essential Functions, Job Duties, and Responsibilities: In general, the work of the Landscaper includes responsibility for the general upkeep and care of Durham Technical Community College’s grounds and campus areas surrounding all of the buildings on the main campus (including the Lawson and Cooper streets), Orange County Campus, and the Northern Durham Center campus. 1. Manage all Landscaping contracts, including but not limited to; Pre-bid, bidding, execution of contracts and inspection of work., 2. Manage the daily operations of Durham Tech Landscaping by showing initiative in the job to ensure a continuous, timely, and efficient operation, using good judgement without constant or direct supervision, and being alert for new ideas and improvements., 3. Maintain and oversee the cleanliness and safety of public walkways, entrances, and campus grounds. This includes removing trash and debris, keeping doorways clear, performing power washing, conducting snow removal, applying salt or deicer to prevent ice buildup, ensuring outdoor furniture is properly positioned, and performing daily litter pickups each morning and afternoon., 4. Follow and complete work assignments as directed by your supervisor, and be willing to assist in temporary or emergency situations, including reassignment from routine duties as needed., 5. Be regular in attendance and willing to cooperate with other employees to complete duties and assignments., 6. Ensure all Durham Tech landscaping needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner., 7. Coordinate with vendors to apply pesticides for the maintenance of ornamentals, shade trees, turf, and other landscaped areas. This includes commercial pesticide application on lawns, public grounds, parks, and trees to ensure healthy and well-maintained vegetation., 8. Actively attend assigned work tickets and update them in a timely manner., 9. Design, purchase product, and plant all annual beds throughout our main, Northern Durham, and Orange County campuses., 10. PM and inspect all landscaping equipment as required by Facility Services Preventive Maintenance program. Notify the Assistant Director of any equipment repairs needed., 11. Ability to prioritize assigned tickets, and upon completion close all work orders in the Work Order System., 12. Develop and implement comprehensive landscape management programs for all turf, trees, plants, and shrubs. This includes mowing, trimming, pruning, edging, mulching, manual weeding, fertilizing, soil testing, liming, irrigation during dry conditions, and controlling weeds, insects, and diseases to ensure healthy and well-maintained grounds., 13. Responsible for tree, plant, and shrub removal and replacement due to storm, disease, or insect damage., 14. Develop and implement a renovation and maintenance plan and schedule for existing landscape areas and annual plant beds. Select and install plantings as needed in existing and new areas to be landscaped., 15. Inspect the college grounds and campus areas surrounding all buildings on the Northern Durham Center and Orange County Campus on a weekly basis and report all findings to the supervisor., 16. Maintain and monitor parts and supply inventories and provide purchase requests to the supervisor as needed., 17. Ensure ConEx box storeroom and vehicles associated with the grounds keeping and landscape equipment are maintained in a clean and orderly manner., 18. Wear uniforms as furnished by Durham Tech during normal working hours and be neat in appearance., 19. Use and maintain all communication equipment as furnished by Durham Tech in compliance with all FCC regulations and as required by the Facility Services Department., 20. Attend local landscaping conferences and seminars in order to remain up to date on the latest landscaping designs and trends., 21. Must complete all mandatory work related and professional development training., 22. Additional duties shall include other appropriate duties as assigned by the Director of Facility Services, Chief Division Officer, and/or the college President. Normal Working Hours: A minimum of a 40-hour work week as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four-and-one-half-day work weeks.
