Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting a high-volume clinical environment by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and maintaining strict quality and safety standards. This role also assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement to keep operations running smoothly in a fast-paced, emergency room–style setting. Responsibilities • Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced lab or hospital-like environment., • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols., • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels are 100% accurate against the order or script., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order to maintain specimen integrity., • Package specimens for transport and store samples at the required temperature in the appropriate collection containers or tubes., • Follow all procedures and protocols necessary to maintain the integrity and stability of specimens during handling and transport., • Update and maintain accurate patient information and specimen records in electronic medical record (EMR) systems and other data systems., • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support laboratory operations and safety., • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling., • Answer telephone calls professionally and read or relay laboratory results as needed to satisfy inquiries in a timely manner., • Comply with all OSHA and DEP regulations and follow safety and infection control procedures at all times., • Attend annual department trainings and stay current with required policies, procedures, and regulatory standards., • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, or workflow and make recommendations to improve efficiency., • Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices to team members when needed.Essential Skills, • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required by state regulations., • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting., • High school diploma or GED., • 2–4 years of overall work experience., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite., • Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood draws and knowledge of different needle gauges and phlebotomy techniques., • Ability to accurately enter and update data in various electronic medical record (EMR) systems., • Excellent customer service skills to support a high volume of patients each day., • Experience with specimen collection, including venipuncture and handling of multiple specimen types., • Ability to work accurately and efficiently under pressure in a high-volume environment.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience as a phlebotomy technician or medical assistant with hands-on phlebotomy responsibilities., • Phlebotomy certification is strongly preferred, even where not strictly required., • Demonstrated ability to handle 100+ patients per day in a fast-paced, emergency room–style setting., • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, matching of requisitions, and specimen processing., • Effective communication skills to interact with patients, clinical staff, and other team members., • Ability to follow complex protocols and adapt to changing priorities in a busy clinical environment.Work Environment This position is based in a fast-paced clinical facility that operates in a style similar to an emergency room, with more than 100 patients passing through daily. The role involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, as well as extensive hands-on work with specimens, laboratory equipment, and electronic medical record systems. Standard work schedules include Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with every other Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., or Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with every other Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, and ongoing training, providing opportunities to build experience and grow within a large, well-structured laboratory setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Albany, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
