Job Description Position Location: This position is based in ACT’s New York office and follows a hybrid schedule, which includes a combination of remote work and working on site. Reports to: Communications Director Employment Type: Part-time Internship Duration: 3 months Hours: 10 hours per week, with the possibility of increasing to up to 20 hours per week as needed. ACT empowers African immigrants to integrate socially, get ahead economically, and engage civically. We develop our members as grassroots leaders who take action to make social change. Since its founding, ACT has supported thousands of African immigrants with direct services, trained hundreds of new leaders, and led successful policy campaigns at the federal, state, and local levels that have impacted hundreds of thousands of immigrants. ACT’s African immigrant membership comes from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures, and languages, is religiously diverse, and is predominantly working-class and low-income. We have offices in New York City, Philadelphia, and the Washington, D.C. metro area. Position Summary: ACT is seeking a Communications Intern to support our digital media and content development. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about digital storytelling, social justice, and amplifying the voices of immigrant communities. The ideal candidate is creative, self-motivated, and comfortable appearing on camera to help produce engaging video content across ACT’s social media platforms. This unpaid internship requires a commitment of 10 hours per week, with the possibility of increasing to 20 hours as needed. It offers hands-on experience in a nonprofit environment and the opportunity to develop skills in video production, social media management, and digital storytelling. Key Responsibilities: • Create short-form video content for platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, tailored to a Gen Z and Millennial audience., • Appear on camera to narrate or present content, as a personality for ACT., • Assist with writing scripts and captions for video content aligned with ACT’s communications strategy., • Experiment with different content formats, styles, and trends to understand what resonates with the audience and identify the most impactful content., • Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in communication studies, marketing, public relations, or related fields., • Experience creating content from concepting, scripting, filming, editing, copywriting, and publishing for multiple social media channels (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, etc.)., • Familiarity with current digital trends and content formats, especially those that engage immigrant and BIPOC Gen Z and Millennial audiences., • Highly motivated and creative, with a passion for fast, short-form storytelling and a willingness to experiment with innovative content formats., • Experience with basic video editing tools (e.g., CapCut, Canva, InShot) is preferred., • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, and other common business software., • Comfortable appearing on camera to present content in a clear, engaging, and energetic manner, as well as conducting interviews, drafting questions, and identifying interviewees for projects., • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively., • Strong verbal and written communication skills., • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment., • Hands-on experience in nonprofit digital communications., • Opportunities to build a portfolio of content and campaign materials., • Exposure to policy and organizing work that impacts African immigrant communities,, • Mentorship and support from ACT’s communications team.
