Job Description Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and Program Director, and as a member of an inter-disciplinary treatment team, assumes case management responsibilities for assigned caseload of individuals who have mental illness and substance abuse disorder. Renders nursing care as assigned by registered nurse in accordance with recognized nursing techniques, procedures and established standards based on the scope of practical nursing. Job Description The FFT Therapist provides FFT (Functional Family Therapy) virtually, to a maximum of 10 voluntarily participating families at a time who reside in NYC. The target population of young adults (16-25 years old), who are referred to us after an arrest. This is a pilot program to offer FFT to families and young people who might otherwise find themselves incarcerated without this alternative. FFT is an evidence-based model which is home-based, intensive, family therapy. The FFT Therapist participates in all FFT training and consultation activities, and program reviews. In addition to providing Family Therapy, the FFT Therapist will collaborate with other service providers, including but not limited to the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) and New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA). The FFT Therapist is required to complete all FFT documentation requirements, including meeting appropriate therapeutic and engagement requirements and assessing for family safety and risk. The Jail Population Review Program reviews incarcerated individuals for opportunities for pretrial release or case resolution. THE OPPORTUNITY This postdoctoral fellowship in forensic psychology is a collaboration between the Center and Columbia University that focuses primarily on forensic assessment with an opportunity to provide psychotherapy to individuals re-entering the community from incarceration. Postdoctoral fellows conduct forensic assessments mainly for the Jail Population Review Program. The Jail Population Review Program provides a number of clinical consultation services, including independent clinical assessment, review of medical records, and psychological testing when indicated. The postdoctoral fellowship is a one to two-year, full-time program providing advanced training at the intersection of psychology and law. Fellows gain supervised experience conducting psychological evaluations in the criminal court context, primarily brief and comprehensive clinical assessments of incarcerated people, as well as violence risk assessments (general violence, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence) using the Structured Professional Judgement (SPJ) approach, criminogenic risk and needs assessments, and mitigation psychological evaluations. Fellows also conduct psychological evaluations and testing to assist the courts in developing treatment plans for those involved in court-mandated treatment, such as mental health courts or other alternative-to-incarceration programs. In collaboration with Columbia University, fellows may conduct psychotherapy with one participant of the Columbia Reentry Initiative under the supervision of Columbia’s faculty or audit a graduate level forensic psychology course at Columbia University (Forensic Assessment or Correctional Psychology). The Columbia Reentry Initiative at the Dean Hope Center for Educational and Psychological Services at Teachers College is a no-cost, evidence-based and trauma-informed psychological treatment program designed to support adults reentering to the community following incarceration. Postdoctoral Psychologists attend weekly multidisciplinary case discussions and monthly didactic seminars covering topics such as case law relevant to forensic psychology, report writing for legal audiences, cultural considerations in forensic work, and other topics related to forensic assessment. Postdoctoral Psychologists report to the Supervising Forensic Psychologist and receive clinical supervision from the Supervising Forensic Psychologist and the Senior Director of Forensic Psychology in order for the candidate to become licensed within 18 months of employment. Of note, this is a postdoctoral position and therefore a full-time position after licensure is not guaranteed. The Postdoctoral Psychologist will work with stakeholders, including judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, special jurisdiction courts, ATI programs, Correctional Health Services, and the Department of Correction. This role presents a unique opportunity to be part of a groundbreaking systemic reform initiative. This role involves navigating and constructively engaging with differing and, at times, competing stakeholder perspectives. SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: • Complete clinical assessment and re-assessments at regular intervals to measure progress towards addressing life areas deficiencies., • Provide individual counseling to address outstanding family, medical, psychiatric, and housing concerns., • In collaboration with each consumer, formulates a treatment plan, monitor achievement of objectives, review and update treatment plans in accordance with regulatory requirements and as clinically indicated., • Conduct evidence-based group counseling services related to a wide range of clinical and community issues., • Maintain up-to-date resident charts including assessments, treatment plans, case notes and documentation of collateral contacts., • Provide crisis intervention services., • Assist in the development and implementation of consumer discharge plans., • Work closely with utilization review staff to ensure completion and accuracy of all necessary health insurance authorization documentation., • Establish community and agency affiliations which address consumer needs and strengthen the delivery of services., • Function as liaison and provide education and direct services to family members, as appropriate, in regards to consumer’s substance use and related behavioral issues., • When necessary due to staff absences or vacancies, maintains a caseload., • When necessary, conduct consumer screening for contraband and collection of samples for urine toxicology testing., • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and case conferences., • When necessary, facilitate case conferences and conduct internal chart audits., • Attend all required in-service training seminars., • Participate in quality improvement activities., • Function as “Manager” on Duty in the absence of an on-site manager., • Other relevant duties as required. REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Marriage and Family Therapy required., • One (1) year experience working in a social service setting providing group counseling, family therapy and case management with chemically dependent clients preferred;, • NYS Licensure as a Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist preferred. Individuals obtaining a limited permit will be considered meeting this requirement., • Proficiency with computer operation (Microsoft Word, Excel, Electronic Health Records, and Outlook programs).
