Job Description Job Title: Management Trainee – Assistant Training Supervisor – Operations Department: Training Reports to: Sr. Manager – Training & Testing The Training Supervisor – Operations is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, delivering, and evaluating operational training programs for Transportation Department employees. This position ensures employees are trained, qualified, and compliant with applicable federal regulations, company operating rules, safety standards, and security requirements. The Training Supervisor oversees operating rules instruction, testing and qualification programs, new-hire onboarding, on-the-job training (OJT) coordination, regulatory compliance initiatives, and continuous improvement of training materials and processes. The position works closely with Transportation leadership and other departments to support safe and efficient railroad operations while promoting a culture of safety, compliance, and operational excellence. Major Job Functions Training Program Administration • Develop, coordinate, schedule, and deliver operational training programs for Transportation Department employees., • Conduct classroom, field, virtual, and hands-on instruction related to operating rules, safety procedures, train handling, air brake systems, and other operational requirements., • Ensure employee qualifications and certifications are maintained in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements., • Create, administer, and maintain examinations, assessments, and qualification records., • Monitor employee training progress and recommend corrective or supplemental training when needed. New Hire Training & Qualification • Coordinate onboarding and qualification activities for newly hired operating employees., • Develop and monitor On-the-Job Training (OJT) schedules in partnership with Transportation leadership., • Evaluate trainee performance and provide coaching, mentoring, and developmental feedback., • Maintain documentation supporting employee qualification and certification requirements. Regulatory Compliance • Ensure training programs comply with applicable Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), OSHA, TSA, DOT, and other regulatory requirements., • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes and incorporate updates into training programs and materials., • Support audits, inspections, and compliance reviews related to employee training and qualification records., • Support Administration of credentialing programs, including Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) requirements, as applicable. Training Development & Continuous Improvement • Develop, revise, and maintain training materials, presentations, examinations, manuals, and instructional aids., • Analyze safety trends, operational incidents, rules exceptions, and performance data to identify training needs., • Collaborate with department leaders to ensure training content aligns with operational requirements and risk reduction strategies., • Utilize adult learning principles and modern instructional methods to improve training effectiveness. Operational Support & Leadership • Coordinate training schedules to minimize operational impact while meeting qualification and compliance requirements., • Participate in investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action initiatives related to operational incidents and safety events., • Serve as a subject matter expert on operating rules and training requirements., • Provide guidance and support to managers and supervisors regarding employee qualification and training matters., • Support departmental and company initiatives as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities • May provide direct oversight, coaching, and performance feedback to trainees and designated instructors., • May coordinate and oversee contract instructors, subject matter experts, or temporary training resources., • Supports employee development and succession planning initiatives. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) • Training completion and qualification rates., • Regulatory compliance and audit results., • On-time completion of training schedules., • New hire qualification success rates., • Reduction in rules violations and operational incidents., • Employee engagement and training effectiveness metrics., • Accuracy and timeliness of training records and documentation. Qualifications Education • Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Education, Business, Safety, Human Resources, or a related field preferred., • Equivalent combination of education and railroad operations experience may be considered., • Conductor and Locomotive Engineer certification required. Experience • Minimum of 5 years of railroad transportation, operations, training, or related experience., • Demonstrated knowledge of railroad operating rules, safety practices, and regulatory requirements., • Experience delivering classroom and/or field-based training preferred., • Prior supervisory, leadership, or instructor experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Thorough knowledge of railroad operating rules and safe operating practices., • Strong understanding of applicable FRA, OSHA, DOT, TSA, and related regulatory requirements., • Excellent presentation, facilitation, coaching, and communication skills., • Ability to develop instructional materials and examinations., • Strong organizational, planning, and project management abilities., • Ability to analyze performance data and identify training opportunities., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and learning management or training record systems., • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across all organizational levels. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements • Ability to work extended, irregular, and on-call hours as required., • Ability to work in office, classroom, yard, terminal, and field environments., • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions., • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces and around railroad equipment., • Ability to climb ladders and steps and occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, or crawl., • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds., • Ability to travel as needed, including overnight travel and extended trips requiring multiple nights away from home., • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, safety footwear, and high-visibility apparel.Company DescriptionConrail is a small railroad with big resources where you can have a rewarding career without sacrificing quality of life.
