Rolling Stock Engineer \n\n Role Purpose\n The Rolling Stock Engineer will support vehicle survey activities with a strong focus on electrical systems and ETCS(European Train Control System) integration and assessment. The role involves inspecting, documenting, and analysing rolling stock electrical systems to support upgrades, modifications, asset condition assessments, and ETCS fitment programmes.\n\n Key Responsibilities\n\n Vehicle Survey & Inspection\n\nConduct detailed on-site surveys of rolling stock, focusing on electrical systems, wiring, control circuits, and onboard equipment.\nCapture accurate data, measurements, and photographic evidence of train systems and layouts.\nProduce structured survey reports, including red-line drawings and documentation updates.\nVerify installed equipment against technical drawings, schematics, and design specifications.Electrical Engineering\n\nAssess condition and configuration of electrical systems, including:\nPower distribution\nControl circuits\nAuxiliary systems\nCab control interfaces\nIdentify obsolescence, compliance, and integration risks.\nSupport development of modification designs and engineering solutions.ETCS /Signalling Systems\n\nEvaluate existing onboard signalling equipment relevant to ETCS integration.\nSupport ETCS retrofit projects by:\nIdentifying installation constraints and interfaces\nAssessing space, power, and wiring requirements\nReviewing compatibility with existing Train Control & Monitoring Systems (TCMS)\nAssist in reviewing ETCS architecture, onboard units (OBU), DMI, balise transmission modules, and antenna positioning.Documentation & Reporting\n\nProduce high-quality technical reports following surveys.\nUpdate schematics, wiring diagrams, and installation drawings.\nRecord and manage survey data in line with project/document control requirements.\nProvide technical input into engineering change documentation.Stakeholder Engagement\n\nLiaise with depot teams, operators, maintainers, and project engineers during survey activities.\nProvide technical support to multidisciplinary teams including mechanical and systems engineers.\nSupport client meetings and technical reviews as required.Safety& Compliance\n\nEnsure all work complies with:\nRailway Group Standards\nRIS standards\nEN 50155 / 50126 / 50128 / 50129 (as applicable)\nFollow safe systems of work when working on or around rolling stock.Essential Skills & Experience\n\nDegree or equivalent qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.\nProven experience working on rolling stock or rail vehicle systems.\nHands-on experience conducting vehicle surveys or inspections.\nStrong understanding of rail vehicle electrical systems and interfaces.\nWorking knowledge of ETCS systems and onboard integration.\nAbility to read and interpret:\nElectrical schematics\nWiring diagrams\nSystem block diagrams\nExperience producing technical reports and engineering documentation.\nCompetence in using standard engineering tools and survey equipment.Desirable Skills & Experience\n\nExperience with ETCS retrofit or new build programmes.\nKnowledge of:\nTCMS (Train Control & Monitoring Systems)\nGSM-R / FRMCS interfaces\nFamiliarity with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Solid Edge, Microstation) for drawing updates.\nExperience working in UK rail environment and standards.\nPTS (Personal Track Safety) or depot access competencies.Key Competencies\n\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills.\nHigh attention to detail, especially in survey and documentation work.\nAbility to work independently on-site and manage survey tasks.\nExcellent communication and reporting skills.\nFlexible and willing to travel to depots and rail sites. \n\nThe NRL Group connect global companies with the right people to bring engineering projects to life.
