DevOps & Infrastructure Engineer - Detailed Job Description\n\nRole Overview\n\nAn opportunity for a DevOps & Infrastructure Engineer to play a key role in delivering and supporting mission-critical systems within a highly automated environment. You will take ownership of the infrastructure layer, ensuring systems are secure, scalable, resilient, and fully aligned to customer and project requirements.\n\nThis role blends hands-on engineering with architectural design, working across the full lifecycle-from initial solution design through to deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimisation. You will collaborate closely with software engineers, delivery teams, support functions, and customer IT stakeholders.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nInfrastructure Architecture & Design\n\nDesign end-to-end infrastructure solutions across on-premise, hybrid, and cloud environments\nDefine compute, storage, networking, virtualisation, and disaster recovery architectures\nProduce technical documentation including solution designs, network diagrams, and sizing specifications\nAlign infrastructure designs with customer IT policies, security standards, and operational constraints\n\nDevOps & Deployment\n\nOwn and optimise CI/CD pipelines to support consistent, automated software delivery\nManage build, release, and deployment processes across development, staging, and production environments\nImplement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent\nDrive best practices for environment consistency, configuration management, and release governance\n\nCyber Security & Compliance\n\nEnsure infrastructure is secure by design, incorporating system hardening and access controls\nManage vulnerability remediation, patching strategies, and security updates\nEmbed security within the software delivery lifecycle (DevSecOps principles)\nSupport audits and ensure compliance with recognised frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials)\nLead incident response and root cause analysis for security and infrastructure-related events\n\nMonitoring, Reliability & Support\n\nImplement monitoring, alerting, and observability across infrastructure and applications\nDefine SLAs/SLOs and ensure systems meet availability and performance requirements\nProvide 3rd line support and escalation for complex infrastructure issues\nConduct capacity planning, performance tuning, and reliability improvements\n\nLifecycle & Maintenance\n\nManage patching cycles across operating systems, databases, and middleware\nMaintain infrastructure inventory, documentation, and lifecycle roadmaps\nDevelop disaster recovery plans and operational runbooks\nEnsure systems remain supportable, secure, and up to date throughout their lifecycle\n\nSkills & Experience\n\nEssential\n\nStrong experience in DevOps, Infrastructure, or Site Reliability Engineering roles\nExpertise in Linux and Windows Server administration\nHands-on experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) and version control (Git)\nExperience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible or similar)\nScripting/automation skills (PowerShell, Python, Bash)\nKnowledge of virtualisation technologies (VMware, Hyper-V)\nUnderstanding of networking concepts (VLANs, firewalls, VPNs) and enterprise storage\nExperience with databases and messaging systems (PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ)\nExposure to monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana)\nStrong understanding of cyber security best practices, patching, and vulnerability management\nAbility to produce clear technical documentation and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders\n\nDesirable\n\nExperience working in industrial, manufacturing, or logistics environments\nKnowledge of warehouse or automation systems and integrations (ERP, WMS, PLC/SCADA)\nCloud experience (Azure) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes)\nFamiliarity with ITIL processes (incident, change, problem management)\nRelevant certifications (e.g., VMware, Security+, CISSP, Terraform)\n\nPersonal Attributes\n\nStrong ownership and accountability for delivering robust infrastructure solutions\nPragmatic problem-solver with the ability to balance technical excellence and delivery timelines\nEffective communicator able to bridge software, infrastructure, and customer stakeholders\nComfortable working in a project-driven, customer-facing environment\nFlexible approach with occasional travel and out-of-hours support for deployments\n\nSummary\n\nThis role offers the opportunity to work on complex, high-availability systems where infrastructure is critical to operational success.
