We’re seeking a Payroll Director to lead payroll operations for a large, multi-state nonprofit. This is an opportunity to shape strategy, improve systems, and guide a talented team—all while ensuring payroll is accurate, timely, and compliant. What You’ll Do Lead & Mentor * Manage and develop a team of 6–8 payroll professionals, fostering accuracy, accountability, and great service. * Partner with Finance, HR, and senior leadership to streamline operations and align payroll practices with organizational goals and collective bargaining agreements. * Establish and track performance metrics and maintain strong internal controls. Oversee Payroll Operations * Lead all end-to-end payroll processes, including weekly, biweekly, and multi-state payrolls. * Ensure accurate payment for union and non-union employees, including overtime, shift differentials, and specialty pay. * Oversee tax withholdings, deductions, garnishments, and benefit contributions. * Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts and resolve discrepancies. Drive Year-End & Tax Compliance * Manage all year-end payroll activities, including W-2 and other required filings. * Monitor tax updates and ensure accurate reporting of fringe benefits, bonuses, and deferred compensation. * Partner with Finance, HR, benefits providers, and retirement administrators to validate year-end data. * Support post-year-end audits and respond to inquiries. Ensure Compliance & Reporting * Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local payroll and labor regulations. * Provide payroll data for grants, cost allocations, and audits. * Prepare and submit accurate reports for internal and external stakeholders. Improve Systems & Processes * Collaborate with IT and vendors to enhance systems and automate workflows. * Implement process improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, and employee experience. Support Employees * Serve as the escalation point for complex payroll inquiries. * Provide training and guidance on payroll policies, deductions, and tax elections. * Resolve issues promptly and professionally. What You Bring Education * Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field. Experience * 15+ years of progressive payroll experience, including at least 5 years leading payroll for a large, complex organization (1,000+ employees). * Hands-on experience managing multi-state payrolls in high-volume environments with both union and non-union workforces. * Strong background with enterprise HRIS/payroll systems (ADP, Workday, Paychex, UKG, etc.). * Deep knowledge of payroll laws, tax regulations, and wage and hour rules. Skills * Strong team leadership and coaching abilities. * Exceptional accuracy, analytical skills, and problem-solving skills. * Excellent communication and partnership skills across departments. * High proficiency in payroll systems and Microsoft Excel. Certifications * CPP certification strongly preferred (or willingness to obtain within one year). Base pay is one part of the Total Compensation that JEVS Human Services provides to recognize employees for their work.
