The Opportunity As the Construction Staff Accountant, you’ll play an integral part in the day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, payroll compliance, job cost accounting, and project administration for commercial construction and roofing projects. This role is responsible for accurate financial processing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, job setup and maintenance, payroll support, and compliance documentation. The Staff Accountant works closely with operations, project managers, and corporate teams to ensure reliable financial data, efficient office operations, and adherence to regulatory and company standards. Key Responsibilities Accounting, Reporting & WIP • Perform assigned accounting duties in accordance with the monthly close schedule., • Prepare financial reports, schedules, and supporting documentation for management review., • Compile, maintain, and communicate Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, including job status, cost-to-complete data, and accruals., • Work directly with the Regional Controller to review WIP schedules, resolve variances, and support monthly P&L analysis., • Review service and construction projects to ensure accurate cost and revenue recognition under percentage-of-completion accounting., • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including invoice entry, statement reconciliation, payment application, and collections support., • Scan, enter, route, and maintain payables to ensure proper approvals and complete documentation., • Create and enter purchase orders within the accounting system., • Generate customer invoices through the CRM system and prepare monthly billing applications for review and submission., • Support payroll processing and accurate job cost labor allocation, including certified payroll reporting when applicable., • Maintain labor documentation in compliance with prevailing wage and project-specific requirements., • Import and maintain job setup information in the accounting system, including budgets, cost codes, and approved change orders., • Set up and maintain vendor and customer records and process required documentation., • Assist managers and operations teams with researching cost and revenue activity in Viewpoint and related systems., • Coordinate and submit permit applications to local and state agencies for commercial construction and roofing projects, as required., • Work with the Operations Manager to meet current business and contractor licensing requirements., • Track and manage submittals, lien releases, preliminary notices, certified payroll submissions (when required), and vendor compliance documentation., • Receive, organize, and maintain construction-related documents and project files., • Communicate with project contacts regarding schedules, documentation requirements, and compliance needs. Office & Cross-Functional Support • Serve as a liaison between accounting, operations, project management, and corporate or technical support teams., • Handle incoming and outgoing calls and emails and provide general office support as needed., • Perform accurate data entry and clerical tasks in support of project and office operations., • Crosstrain to provide backup coverage for other administrative roles., • Apply analytical and critical-thinking skills to identify risks, improve processes, and support informed decision-making., • Demonstrate initiative by anticipating work needs and proactively supporting team objectives., • Perform special projects and additional duties as assigned by the Vice President, Regional Controller, Office Manager, Operations Manager, or Project Managers. Skills & Knowledge • Strong knowledge of commercial construction accounting and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition., • Hands-on understanding of WIP schedules, job status reporting, and cost-to-complete concepts., • Ability to analyze project financial data, identify variances, and support accurate cost and revenue recognition., • Proficiency with accounting and ERP systems; Viewpoint experience preferred., • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with the ability to prepare and analyze financial schedules., • Understanding construction documentation, including contracts, change orders, billing applications, lien releases, permits, and warranties., • Knowledge of prevailing wage and certified payroll requirements preferred., • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities., • Effective written and verbal communication skills with cross-functional teams., • Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and commitment to company values. Education & Experience • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred., • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in commercial construction accounting and/or construction office administration., • Demonstrated experience with percentage-of-completion accounting and revenue recognition., • Experience preparing, reviewing, or supporting WIP schedules preferred., • Experience with job cost accounting, project setup, billing, and financial reporting., • Experience with certified payroll and prevailing wage reporting preferred., • Prior experience with ERP systems (e.g., Viewpoint) and CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce) desirable., • Experience supporting project managers and operations teams in a construction environment.
